The Incorporated States of Yriae is a large, genial nation, renowned for its frequent executions, public floggings, and compulsory military service. The compassionate, democratic, devout population of 50 million Yrieggites are fiercely patriotic and enjoy great social equality; they tend to view other, more capitalist countries as somewhat immoral and corrupt.

The medium-sized, socially-minded government juggles the competing demands of Education, Defense, and Welfare. The average income tax rate is 41.0%, but much higher for the wealthy.

The sizeable but underdeveloped Yriaean economy, worth 1.60 trillion phlegmes a year, is led by the Arms Manufacturing industry, with major contributions from Book Publishing, Furniture Restoration, and Information Technology. State-owned companies are common. Average income is 31,930 phlegmes, and distributed extremely evenly, with little difference between the richest and poorest citizens.

Sociologists can charge whatever fee they like as the nation tries to find itself, extreme hiring regulations mean a job in Yriae is often a lifetime appointment, lovesick people are told 'it's not them, it's you', and a suspicious number of John Smiths are known to donate to Yriaean politicians. Crime, especially youth-related, is totally unknown, thanks to a capable police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Yriae's national animal is the horseshit beetle, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests.
