The National Collectivity of Polre is a massive, safe nation, ruled by Administrator Corthins with an iron fist, and notable for its keen interest in outer space, sprawling nuclear power plants, and devotion to social welfare. The only soporific permitted during sermons is the preacher's voice, five-year-olds chanting "Little Miss Muffet" are accused of bullying arachnophobes, ice-filled coffins are ominously positioned in the corner of every hospital ward, and a good deed is rewarded with a thank you note attached to a deportation order.
