The Free Land of The lando is a huge, efficient nation, renowned for its rum-swilling pirates, compulsory military service, and irreverence towards religion. The hard-nosed, hard-working population of 596 million landoans enjoy some of the most opulent lifestyles in the region, unless they are unemployed or working-class, in which case they are variously starving to death or crippled by easily preventable diseases.

The tiny, liberal, pro-business government juggles the competing demands of Defense, Administration, and Education. Citizens pay a flat income tax of 5.9%.

The thriving landoan economy, worth 45.0 trillion Pelas a year, is driven almost entirely by the private sector, which is broadly diversified and led by the Gambling industry, with major contributions from Uranium Mining, Soda Sales, and Pizza Delivery. Average income is 75,576 Pelas, but there is an enormous disparity between incomes, with the richest 10% of citizens earning 422,131 per year while the poor average 6,739, a ratio of 62.6 to 1.

People seem disproportionately distraught when told a museum has a phones-off policy, passive-aggressive congratulations cards inform mums-to-be that their pregnancy is their greatest achievement in life, the dance skills of Leader are said to be almost as subversive as their politics, and war vets look after war animals. Crime, especially youth-related, is a major problem, probably because of the absence of a police force. The lando's national animal is the Gaint Sandworm, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation.

The lando is ranked 241,200^th in the world and 425^th in Starlight for Most Developed, scoring 51.92 on the Human Development Index.
