The United Colonies of New Atlantico is a colossal, cultured nation, ruled by Martial Law with a fair hand, and renowned for its smutty television, frequent executions, and infamous sell-swords. The hard-nosed, hard-working, democratic, humorless, devout population of 5.436 billion Atlantians are effectively ruled by a group of massive corporations, who run for political office and provide their well-off citizens with world-class goods and services. Their poorer citizens, however, are mostly starving to death while being urged to go out and get real jobs. The populace has reasonably extensive civil rights, although these are mostly aimed at allowing them to buy whatever they like.

The relatively small, corrupt, pro-business, outspoken government juggles the competing demands of Defense, Industry, and Education. It meets to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Olympus. Citizens pay a flat income tax of 34.6%.

The frighteningly efficient Atlantian economy, worth a remarkable 1,588 trillion Dollars a year, is broadly diversified and led by the Information Technology industry, with major contributions from Arms Manufacturing, Retail, and Book Publishing. Black market activity is rampant. Average income is an amazing 292,131 Dollars, but there is an enormous disparity between incomes, with the richest 10% of citizens earning 1,596,699 per year while the poor average 27,323, a ratio of 58.4 to 1.

Not showing enough enthusiasm for mutual assured destruction is a court-martial offence, the might of the entire Atlantian Navy is focused on fifty bemused spear-throwing islanders, glittering new sports stadiums adorn every city and town, and the act of reporting blasphemy is known as 'Orthodoxxing'. Crime, especially youth-related, is all-pervasive, probably because of the absence of a police force.
