The Borderlands of No Hope is a titanic, orderly nation, ruled by TaylorJames with an iron fist, and notable for its compulsory military service, parental licensing program, and stringent health and safety legislation. The compassionate, cynical, humorless population of 16.133 billion No Hopers are ruled with an iron fist by the dictatorship government, which ensures that no-one outside the party gets too rich. In their personal lives, however, citizens are relatively unoppressed; it remains to be seen whether this is because the government genuinely cares about its people, or if it hasn't gotten around to stamping out civil rights yet.

The medium-sized, corrupt, well-organized government juggles the competing demands of Education, Law & Order, and Administration. It meets to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Disarray. The average income tax rate is 22.8%, but much higher for the wealthy.

The frighteningly efficient No Hoper economy, worth a remarkable 3,722 trillion TJS a year, is driven entirely by a combination of government and state-owned industry, with private enterprise illegal. The industrial sector, which is fairly diversified, is dominated by the Information Technology industry, with significant contributions from Tourism, Book Publishing, and Furniture Restoration. Average income is an amazing 230,719 TJS, and distributed extremely evenly, with little difference between the richest and poorest citizens.

The central government is trying to keep things flowing, the government is plagued with uncertainty, people seem disproportionately distraught when told a museum has a phones-off policy, and professionals are ready to retire by the time they receive permission to use their credentials. Crime, especially youth-related, is totally unknown, thanks to a well-funded police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. No Hope's national animal is the Axolotl, which is also the nation's favorite main course.
