Ah I see the telegram, maybe on top of closing embassies, they specifically banned us so if any of us wanted to leave here (as if!) we couldn't move there

Calling supporting the "fascist Russia" is so rich when effectually it means deciding not to challenge the neonazi junta in Ukraine.

I lean slightly pro-Ukraine, but it’s marginal. I take that view mainly for Russia annexing Crimea and then invading in 2022, and out of a crude deduction that as Russia is capitalist post-USSR, it would also be imperialist. I still don’t want a Third World War if it escalates between Russia and NATO though. No-one in their right mind should want that frankly.

Equally, NATO’s expansion in to Eastern Europe did violate promises made during the Gorbachev era and Ukraine has the azov battalion as a neo-nazi militia as well as banning the country’s communist parties. The 2014 revolution in Ukraine could easily be used to raise doubts about the current governments legitimacy, as Russia has tried to do so.

I don’t know enough about the complex historical background to be sure, but that is where I come out. It’s just all very messy which ever side you take.

Needless to say, a pro-Russia stance may not be popular on the left but it’s an arguably legitimate interpretation of the kind of “revolutionary defeatism” practiced by Lenin in World War I (and I think also Trotskyists in World War II) in the context of the Russo-Ukraine war. It is something comrades should be relatively free to discuss among themselves to sort out the ideological issues behind which stance we take.

And as for “fascist Russia”, we may well have a “fascist America” soon if Trump wins in November, which will complicate things even more.

I love this comment, but I don’t even think our real enemy is the government, I think it’s the people controlling the government, I believe you called them “bankers”, watch GDF on YouTube, his most recent few videos are about who really controls America

Personally I don’t think Trump will do anything of note if he wins. He never really did the first time.

I envy whatever alternate timeline you live in. Lol. :D

I still haven’t got over an American president threatening to nuke a hurricane or suggesting people inject bleach. The half-an-hour false alarm when Hawaii thought it was going to get nuked by North Korea during a military stand-off wasn’t great either.

But, slightly more seriously I can think of:
* they rolled back regulations on mercury to appease the coal industry,
* attempted to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement and cut back environmental regulations,
* appointed three Supreme Court justices to over turn roe v wade/ abortion rights,
* scrapped Obama-era pandemic planning and then grossly mishandled the covid pandemic response,
* and attempted to overthrow the US government on January 6th.

So, it wasn’t great to put it mildly.

To be honest I don’t see much wrong with those bullet points, even if they were true, except maybe the first one, I don’t really like big business

Fair enough. Alot of Trump’s presidency ended up being media white noise about various public relations fiasco’s (especially on twitter) rather than substantive debates on policy. So sometimes important things went under the radar because they were’t eye catching or sensational enough.

And that makes sense. It’s sad
