The Commonwealth of Ocularist is a very large, safe nation, renowned for its sprawling nuclear power plants, compulsory military service, and keen interest in outer space. The compassionate, democratic population of 311 million Ocularistians are highly moralistic and fiercely conservative, in the sense that they tend to believe most things should be outlawed. People who have good jobs and work quietly at them are lauded; others are viewed with suspicion.

The medium-sized government juggles the competing demands of Administration, Law & Order, and Defense. The average income tax rate is 43.0%.

The Ocularistian economy, worth 19.2 trillion Lokes a year, is fairly diversified and led by the Information Technology industry, with significant contributions from Trout Farming, Basket Weaving, and Arms Manufacturing. Toy versions of heroin paraphernalia let kids pretend to be their favourite TV characters, the new Ocularistian-made OS is buggier and more inconvenient than a horse-drawn carriage, citizens are allowed to rise or fall based on their own merits, and stocks go up when the internet says so. Crime, especially youth-related, is totally unknown, thanks to a well-funded police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Ocularist's national animal is the serpeant, which is also the nation's favorite main course.
