The United Kingdom of Berriel is a massive, cultured nation, ruled by Álvaro III with an even hand, and remarkable for its unlimited-speed roads, irreverence towards religion, and stringent health and safety legislation. The compassionate population of 1.84 billion Berrielians are fiercely patriotic and enjoy great social equality; they tend to view other, more capitalist countries as somewhat immoral and corrupt.

The private sector mostly consists of enterprising ten-year-olds selling lemonade on the sidewalk, but the government is looking at stamping this out. Explicit slash fiction is repackaged for kindergarten kids as stories about friends cuddling friends, dictators have dubbed Berriel the land of lunatics, radio shows frequently feature people denouncing religion, and religious turf wars have caused frustrated police to pray for divine intervention. Crime is totally unknown, thanks to a well-funded police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Berriel's national animal is the Shih Tzu, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its national religion is Secularism.
