hi guys

The Kingdom of Giovanniland

TODAY IN THE WEST

It's Booknesday and I'm eager to know what TWPers have been reading recently!

Speaking of reading, you should take a look at the May 2024 edition of The Western Post if you haven't yet, and upvote it to show your appreciation for our staff's work!

Today's Midweek Mocktail recipe is also out, featuring not only the mocktail, but also the original recipe for those who prefer it.

Last but not least, don't forget to endorse Overthinkers and the Guardians!

I’ve just spent hours I’ll never get back in the Swedish prison known as IKEA. Aaagh! We spent an hour or more trying to organise delivery for stuff that was currently out of stock and one piece that was in stock but I thought wouldn’t fit in the car.

People kept telling us that we wouldn’t have to pay double delivery but we did. Well, no we didn’t cos I said “Sod it, this piece will fit in the car”.

It did, just about. :)

I don’t need a mocktail, I need a very large beer!

Actually, this Booknesday I'm looking for advice. Any recommendations on where to start in Discworld? I really want to get into it but prior attempts have not gone well.

Hard one - the books do follow a timeline of sorts. Characters encountered in the early volumes have aged in later ones. The first books e.g. “The Colour of Magic” are more of a spoof on fantasy novels - the later books are deeper, more philosophical but still a hoot.

I think the first one I read was “Wyrd Sisters” which was the sixth book and my introduction to the inestimable Granny Weatherwax. It’s also a bit of a mick-take of the Scottish play.

I went back and read the earlier ones after that and continued to read them until the last one, “The Shepherd’s Crown”.

Me and Laudesia have also decided to put future monthly contests on hold, and will discuss more about our plans for their return when cards are back and we get to know the result of the recovery effort.

Important Update: Cards are now back to roughly what they were before the crash thanks to the admins' hard work! There's a few issues to fix, so you can view your cards but the market is disabled for a few more days according to them.

For the TWP Card Club, this means that contests will be returning in June according to what me and Laud have decided! There'll be some time for people to return to farming and get used to cards again, but we will be having our yearly Pride-themed contest for next month!
