Why are we using Imperial Japan's Naval ensign as our symbol for the West Pacific? Just curious, I have some ideas of what to change it to if we are authorised to do that.

It is decidedly not Imperial Japan.

Ah my bad, but why this one? I'd love to hear the process behind it.

  1. The Rising Sun Flag, which is also the current ensign of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, looks like this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rising_Sun_Flag

  2. The Flag of The West Pacific, current version designed by myself on 2/17/2020, looks like this.

You may notice that they are not the same!

The West Pacific has a nearly 20-year history of using sunset flags with a disc on the left and rays radiating to the right. The current version of red and white comes from a shift in design from red and purple to red and white that began around 2019, near the beginning of Bran Astor's delegacy (if memory serves). Part of the reason was simply because red and white looks snappier than red and purple, though purple is still retained as a tertiary color, as you can see from the region's WFE and dispatch branding.

Oh I am just being extreamly dumb. I am just from that region and kinda had to do a double take there seeing that. Cheers for the wisdom mate. I really need to get my knowledge of Japan up to snuff.
