The Lay of the Land
Across the scarfaced terrain
slowly disappearing
only phantom pain remains
Scarcely audible foul laughter seeps out
from the red Info Box
making some turn quietly in their graves

Nothing but future ruins
material for the next layer

Mela, Mela, Mela, Mela, Melancholia
Melancholia, mon cher,
Mela, Mela, Mela, Mela, Melancholia
floats over the new city
and over the land

Over the control centres
over the stubble fields of concrete
over the secret net of bunkers
refusing to be wiped out
Marlene go home!
also over the Marlene-Dietrich-Platz

The new temples are already cracked
future ruins
one day grass will also grow over the city
over its final layer

Mela, Mela, Mela, Mela, Melancholia
Melancholia, mon cher,
Mela, Mela, Mela, Mela, Melancholia
floats over the new city
and over the land

In the lascerated sky
flown to bits by the jets rehearsing
she hangs with widespread wings
sleepless and with frozen gaze
pointed at rubble
behind her the future piling up
slowly she flies higher and higher
at last surveys the entire land
What is the lay of the land?
What is the lay of the land?
What is the lay of the land?
What is the lay of the land?

All of these go onto the Bar's juke-box. Every time a song or group in mentioned in a region where I can see it, I throw them onto the playlist.

It's a cool logo, yes. This is the cover of the 12" single that includes Sand.

Blixa Bargeld's influence on the music which backs Nick Cave's lyrics is almost always apparent.

Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds - The Carny

"And no-one saw the carny go
And the weeks flew by
Until they moved on the show
Leaving his caravan behind
It was parked out on the south east ridge
And as the company crossed the bridge
With the first rain filling the bone-dry river bed
It shone, just so, upon the edge
Away, away, we're sad, they said

Dog-boy, atlas, mandrake, the geeks, the hired hands
There was not one among them that did not cast an eye behind
In the hope that the carny would return to his own kind
The carny left behind a horse, all skin and bone
That he named "Sorrow"
And it was a shallow, unmarked grave
That that old nag was laid
In the then parched meadow

And it was the Dwarves that were given the task of digging the ditch
And laying the nag's carcass in the ground
While boss Bellini, waved his smoking pistol around
Saying, "The nag is dead meat"
"We can't afford to carry dead weight"
While the whole company, standing about
Not making a sound
And turning to the Dwarves perched on the enclosure gate
The boss says, "Bury this lump of crow bait"

And the rain came hammering down
Everybody running for their wagons
Tying all the canvas flaps down
The mangy cats growling in their cages
The bird-girl flapping and squawking in the round
The whole valley reeking of wet beast
Wet beast and rotten, sodden hay
Freak and brute creation
All packed up and on their way

The three Dwarves peering from their wagon's hind
Moses says to Noah, "We shoulda dugga deepa one"
Their grizzled faces like dying moons
Still dirty from the digging done
And Charlie, the eldest of the three, said
"I guess the carny ain't gonna show"
And they were silent for a spell
Wishing they'd done a better job of burying Sorrow

And the company passed from the valley
Into a higher ground
The rain beat on the ridge and on the meadow
And on the mound
Until nothing was left, nothing left at all
Except the body of Sorrow
That rose in time
To float upon the surface of the eaten soil

And a murder of crows did circle round
First one, then the others flapping blackly down
And the carny's van still sat upon the edge
Tilting slowly as the firm ground turned to sludge
And the rain it hammered down
And no-one saw the carny go
I say it's funny how things go"

Yes. An old colloquial expression for a navy sailor (I don't fully know why, but that's how I've heard it used). It has evolved over time, I think, and may have accumulated other meanings, become slang for being "cheated, robbed and beaten".

[edit: The Urban Dictionary has a colorful example of usage, "You're one of us now you scurvy dog, no woman will have you, there's no life left but the sea. You're Screwed, Blued and Tattooed."]

Can I get onto the map?
Forest's map operated on an opt in basis. Any nation wishing to join the regional map must have a regional Influence rating of 30 SPDR or higher. You can check your regional influence here. Influence is a measure of a combination of World Assembly endorsements and length of time spent in a region. Nations below 30 SPDR must wait until they reach that level before applying.

How big can I be?

You may not request an area for your nation larger than approximately 500 by 500 pixels (a 500×500 box is located on the bottom right of the map for reference) on the full uploaded map scale unless you have 100 SPDR or over. If you surpass 100 SPDR and would like to request a larger size, please telegram the cartographers with your new request.

What Else Can Be Requested

You may request a specific size for your nation so long as it is below the requirements listed above. You may request a specific location, access to a river, water, landlocked status, etc. so long as it is within reason. If you would like your nation in a specific location on the map, please check on the biome map[pending] to make sure that its climate matches that area appropriately.

I've had a similar experience. When I arrived, I was 186 out of 186, by looking at the history. Now I'm up to No. 32, and I'm in the top 9% in the region. That means that just over 150 of those 186 countries from the day I joined have either left (temporarily or permanently), or have cte'd. It's strange to think of. And only nine nations have residency that is double mine. And I still feel like I don't know what I'm doing sometimes, lol.

Edit:
I did some quick math, and I found this breakdown of residency for Forest:

8+ years: 1 (i.e. Ransium (9.78 years))
4-8 years: 9
2-4 years: 31
1-2 years: 63
180 days - 1 year: 55
90-179 days: 28
30-89 days: 156 (lol Z-Day)
0-30 days: 55 (not bad for the last month)

Unless "uncharted" has a different meaning on this version of Earth...

Picture it. To have a registered country, a grid must be spread across the entire country, with a properly labeled x and y axis on the end. There is a constant struggle between the "civilized" nations that adhere to these standards, and the purists that refuse to conform to the rest of the world. There are wars, assassinations, and entire spy rings based around trying to convert one side to the other, all of which goes unbeknownst to the general populous, due to the misinformation campaign. Both sides portray the other as unorganized savages, one labeling the other's land as simply "charted" and "uncharted" respectively, to make it seem that one side is objectively better than the other, due to how "organized" their side is.

Or, you know, Forest has so much respect for nature, we left a large portion of it untouched, and therefore uncharted, but that's a little hard to believe in my opinion.
