Off the top of my head, Ireland has an orange bar on its tricolor, the Netherlands' tricolor used to have an orange rather than red bar, and on special occasions a thin orange bar is added on top of the flag still.

This fascinates me. It's because orange wasn't really a color of it's own until late 1400's, long after heraldric colors were standardized, and purple was simply too expensive.

Aclion wrote:purple was simply too expensive.

The dye initially used to make purple came from the Phoenician trading city of Tyre from a small mollusk that was only found in the Tyre region of the Mediterranean Sea. More than 9,000 mollusks were needed to create just one gram of Tyrian purple. So it's a lot of work and used up a lot of resources. That's why it was expensive.

BTW anyone else interested in NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month)? I was reminded of it by this dispatch when I went to vote on Auphelia's Z-Day Exit Poll:

If you live in the temperate parts of the northern hemisphere, then you’ve perhaps noticed the leaves falling off trees, a chill settling into the air and your breath misting before your eyes, all signs that November is fast approaching. Other ways you can tell include fiercely clean-shaven young men asking you to sponsor their moustache growth and writers clutching their notepads tightly, scribbling little notes and muttering things with a panicked expression. Because for many of us, November isn’t just a month, it’s a month of writing.

National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo, or just NaNo for short) is an international writing event that takes place every year in November. The challenge is simple, write a novel in a month, or, more specifically, write 50,000 words in a month. It might not actually be a whole novel, but, at an average of 1,667 words a day, it is still quite a challenge.

Why do we do this? Because it challenges us to actually get some of the writing done that we never quite get around to! Because it’s a great way to encourage yourself and other writers! Because you can make friends and share great stories! Most of all, because it’s a challenge and it’s fun!

Well, this year, a bunch of us in the South Pacific, including our writing group, the Silicon Pens, are taking part in NaNo and we’d like you to give it a go too!

What do you need to know to take part?

Not a lot. You should sign up on Linkthe NaNoWriMo website, and then, if you want to talk to the rest of us about it, join us in Linkthe NaNo Hangout channel in the regional Discord server, chat about it on the RMB or post about it on Linkthe dedicated forum thread.

Oh yeah, and you need an idea, but don’t worry, it doesn’t have to be epic, original or even all that good, the important thing is that you have something you can start writing. We’ll help with ideas, encouragement, writing prompts, writing sprints and whatever else we can think of to throw your way throughout the month.

So, why not give it a go? They say everyone has a novel inside them. Why not see if you can’t uncover yours this November?

And here's a list of writing prompts to help you, updated daily (ish)!

Blended colors like orange are particularly interesting. It was when my son first started playing with (and sorting) the expanded LEGO collection that I first noticed he didn’t distinguish between yellow-orange and yellow-green. He put them in the same box compartment together. I already knew my father was colorblind, and that it’s a female-linked recessive gene, so I wasn’t surprised. Presumably my father’s maternal grandfather also had color vision issues, but back before there were millions of computer-generated synthetic dyes, how much would he have noticed? My father didn’t know he was seeing colors differently until he joined the Coast Guard and failed some of the tests about their flag meanings. Some game developers are trying to help players with color vision differences by offering special settings, but my son says they usually make it worse. Same with color vision lenses.
The cultural components are even more interesting. Generally languages have words for colors that we talk about. https://theconversation.com/languages-dont-all-have-the-same-number-of-terms-for-colors-scientists-have-a-new-theory-why-84117
So in re orange and heraldry, some cultures that were using saffron for deep yellow dyes might have had a word for orange sooner than others who didn’t have much access to saffron (Europeans). Purple probably became associated with royalty among Europeans who first obtained the means for making it from countries they colonized, so it was expensive because it was rare. Complicating things even more is the way colors are seen differently depending on the light, and background. So an orange flag component might have been particularly visible in a Northern light, against a green landscape.

Don't quote me on this but I believe the purple dye came from the ground-up shells of snails, historically sold by the Phoenicians.

Right, but these days we'd never use anything so gross.

Nowadays, we only use carmine from beetle shells on lipstick and red M&Ms. :)

Oh right, that makes sense. I knew about the color purple being prohibitively expensive, but I didn't consider that being the case for orange.

Yeah, I'd heard that before. And also heard they depopulated the Mediterranean of the poor things.

But also, the cheaper version, "woad," used for a slightly inferior blue and purple:

Nah. Dissolved the government instead.

Well, everything except the "administration," anyway, which now appears to own basically all industry. Can't decide if this is the pinnacle of communism or privitization. I've suspect that, at their apex, they're largely indistinguishable.

Since NS allows feudal politics, I think they should create new Goverment types like "Lords paradise", "Feudal anarchy", or "Feudal State".

This would be cool. Would be neat if there were more "Medieval" aspects, though I understand this game is meant to be in a contemporary setting.

Maybe there could be a selection of "themes" you could choose from: "Tribal," "Classical," "Medieval," "Modern," "Future" etc. And each category could be customized to fit each theme.

Just encountered issue 634, and I'm left wondering the effects bullet trains have on the environment, since it presents a choice of public transportation or environment, and the literature seems pretty split on the environmental impacts. Of course, such projects would be harmful when they cut through culturally and environmentally important land, but at the same time, the environmental and sociological impact of traffic congestion surely shows a clear need for investment into alternative travel methods that will improve the overall quality of life.

Based on my recollections, I will just say that there will be unintended consequences since this is NS (even more so than with other issues). Think especially hard about which statistics you wish to prioritize. Alternatively, be lazy and look at the effect ranges here: http://www.mwq.dds.nl/ns/results/634.html .

Of course, I'm aware of the unintended consequence that every decision makes here. The issue just got me thinking about whether traffic congestion pollution can justify accelerated improvement of public transportation, especially since I live in what is arguably the worst city in the world for traffic, barely improving its public transport in any meaningful capacity. And thanks for the link to decision effects, though I doubt I'll be using it much since I won't be able to resist consulting it for the effects every time. Plus, I'd rather organically steer the nation to the revived goal of endless bureaucracy and red tape for now, and my prioritized goals seem to be reflected by my rankings so far.

Scale insects are Hemiptera, not beetles. They are far more closely related to bedbugs, aphids, and cicadas than beetles. Still odd for sure!

Pushing stats up can be so frustrating... I've only had 1 issue out of the last 15 or so raise my eco-friendliness. Still a net loss.

Also, side note - Environmental Beauty seems like a strange measurement. The only thing nations can really do to make their environment nice is being clean, otherwise, it's just a matter of whether the nation is located in a pretty area, which NS doesn't track. So I don't really understand why NS considers it seperate from eco-friendliness.

I always assumed NS makes the assumption that all natural environments are beautiful, regardless of whether they look like a travel brochure, and that the closer you keep your environment to it's natural, pristine state, the more "beautiful" it is. So your nation could be in a dry, cracked desert or the arctic tundra, but if you strive to keep it the way your people "found" it, it will be considered a beautiful environment.
