The Protectorate of Werlinn is a gargantuan, efficient nation, renowned for its barren, inhospitable landscape, avowedly heterosexual populace, and compulsory military service. The hard-nosed, hard-working, democratic population of 10.552 billion Werlinnians are effectively ruled by a group of massive corporations, who run for political office and provide their well-off citizens with world-class goods and services. Their poorer citizens, however, are mostly starving to death while being urged to go out and get real jobs. The populace has reasonably extensive civil rights, although these are mostly aimed at allowing them to buy whatever they like.

The tiny, outspoken government juggles the competing demands of Defense, Welfare, and Education. It meets to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Human. Citizens pay a flat income tax of 6.5%.

The very strong Werlinnian economy, worth 796 trillion kronor a year, is driven almost entirely by the private sector, which is broadly diversified and led by the Information Technology industry, with major contributions from Woodchip Exports, Book Publishing, and Arms Manufacturing. Average income is 75,486 kronor, but there is a significant disparity between incomes, with the richest 10% of citizens earning 259,548 per year while the poor average 16,095, a ratio of 16.1 to 1.

Breast milk is being redistributed from each according to their ability to each according to their need, the nation's Medal of Honour can be found as a free toy in breakfast cereal, soldiers are equipped with multi-million krona battlesuits, and members of majority races are forced out of their homes to make way for Bigtopians. Crime, especially youth-related, is well under control. Werlinn's national animal is the squirrel, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation.
