The Armed Republic of Loratomic is a titanic, efficient nation, notable for its barren, inhospitable landscape and spontaneously combusting cars. The hard-working, cynical population of 10.762 billion Loranians are rabid consumers, partly through choice and partly because the government tells them to and dissenters tend to vanish from their homes at night.

The relatively small, pro-business, well-organized government juggles the competing demands of Law & Order, Defense, and Education. Citizens pay a flat income tax of 14.5%.

The very strong Loranian economy, worth 635 trillion rubledollars a year, is fairly diversified and led by the Book Publishing industry, with significant contributions from Door-to-door Insurance Sales, Gambling, and Automobile Manufacturing. The country's famous rainforests are being bulldozed by the mining industry, it is illegal to make racist remarks in public, surveillance cameras are banned, and people reciting Shakespeare have become a common sight. Crime is a problem. Loratomic's national animal is the hawk, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to toxic air pollution.
