The Theocracy of Ghilead is a huge, orderly nation, remarkable for its free-roaming dinosaurs, state-planned economy, and punitive income tax rates. The hard-nosed, cynical, humorless, devout population of 587 million Ghileadites are ruled without fear or favor by a psychotic dictator, who outlaws just about everything and refers to the populace as "my little playthings."

The enormous, corrupt, moralistic, socially-minded, well-organized government juggles the competing demands of Defense, Law & Order, and Administration. It meets to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Gideon City. The average income tax rate is 76.6%.

The sizeable but underdeveloped Ghileadian economy, worth 22.6 trillion Tokens a year, is driven entirely by a combination of government and state-owned industry, with private enterprise illegal. However, for those in the know, there is a large, well-organized, quite specialized black market in Arms Manufacturing, Uranium Mining, Beef-Based Agriculture, and Trout Farming. The private sector mostly consists of enterprising ten-year-olds selling lemonade on the sidewalk, but the government is looking at stamping this out. Average income is 38,528 Tokens, and evenly distributed, with the richest citizens earning only 4.2 times as much as the poorest.

The police go to great efforts to seize contraband favored by politicians on the police oversight committee, caps with skulls on them are the height of fashion, all government facilities are built in the subterranean citadel of Gideon City, and morale within the seismologist community has hit rock bottom. Crime, especially youth-related, is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Ghilead's national animal is the Dove, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to toxic air pollution.

Ghilead is ranked 278,110^th in the world and 172^nd in The Western Isles for Largest Gambling Industry, scoring -11.69 on the Kelly Criterion Productivity Index.
