The Worm of Deepuba is a mammoth, socially progressive nation, ruled by Richard with an iron fist, and renowned for its suspicion of poets and stringent health and safety legislation. The cynical population of 7.748 billion Deepubans are ruled with an iron fist by the dictatorship government, which ensures that no-one outside the party gets too rich. In their personal lives, however, citizens are relatively unoppressed; it remains to be seen whether this is because the government genuinely cares about its people, or if it hasn't gotten around to stamping out civil rights yet.

The relatively small, socially-minded, well-organized government juggles the competing demands of Law & Order, Defense, and Welfare. It meets to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Uba. The average income tax rate is 16.7%, but much higher for the wealthy.

The large but underdeveloped Deepuban economy, worth 169 trillion plortches a year, is led by the Furniture Restoration industry, with major contributions from Soda Sales, Trout Farming, and Basket Weaving. Black market activity is notable. State-owned companies are common. Average income is 21,835 plortches, and distributed extremely evenly, with little difference between the richest and poorest citizens.

Almost all products in Deepuba are hand-crafted due to strict employment laws, crime suspects are forced to submit to blood testing, stores employing more than 100 employees are required to be at least twenty miles from any competitor, and prison is a nightmare. Crime is well under control, thanks to a well-funded police force. Deepuba's national animal is the worm and its national religion is Qartism.
