The Council Republic of Zulanka in TCB | The discussion on theory earlier avoided clearly elucidating on the fundamental reason why such education should be encouraged - to guide practice. Theory for the sake of itself can be actively detrimental as Mao touched on in Oppose Book Worship. It's the interplay between practice and theory that forms what Marxists often call praxis, the two locked in a spiral expanding and advancing the other. Disregarding theory is sure to lead to tactical and strategic issues that have already been addressed as well as recreating aspects of theory that frankly have likely been explained better already. In this light those who are deeply critical about previous socialist projects should be the first to emphasize reading more. Leftist texts can be dry and the language distant to contemporary readers, but at the same time concepts in them can be quite intuitive. Take for example the industrial reserve army (rendered elsewhere as the reserve army of labour) Marx mentions in Capital Vol. I, Ch. 25 - sounds scary right? All that is is the mass of unemployed people in capitalist regimes, where the simple existence of a surplus of workers is used as a way to curb workers' power. Every worker who has dealt with scabs, heard their boss say that someone is replaceable, or something similar understands on a visceral level this power the bourgeoisie so cruelly wields. Reading Marx's work here helps one understand how the RAoL functions and puts into perspective the history behind it, how unique it is to capitalism. Learning more about previous socialist projects like the USSR and how they abolished the RAoL is worthwhile too. When I finished this chapter of Capital I understood why full employment was something the Soviets strove for. This knowledge is empowering, not only giving us a more accurate and detailed picture of capitalism and its issues, and not merely for strategy - it can impact your personal life. Knowledge of the RAoL should make any worker in fields where there are labor shortages more liable to not hold back against the class enemy. --- While anger is understandable in response to slander against other socialist projects, the dismissive tone towards democratic socialism and other tendencies in previous posts should be avoided. Allende isn't the only demsoc to ever hold state power - demsocs do have a successful project to point to in Venezuela. Their communal councils serve as organs of direct and participatory democracy; these institutions offer a glimpse of a different future and are worth studying regardless of tendency. If we can look at libertarian socialism more broadly than just anarchism we can likewise find projects that have borne fruit in the Zapatista territories.
