Maputo Chronicle - International Commitments Expanded by Zambique Due to the recent conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh between Armenia and Azerbaijan, a Zambican aid mission has been dispatched to the area to assist civilians displaced by the war. Over 200 aid workers (ie. doctors, medical staff, technicians, a security detail, social service workers) are currently operating in multiple refugee centres in Armenia, and collaborating with other humanitarian and government agencies in providing support for displaced and affected persons. With an annual $7.5 billion US-dollars worth of international aid commitments, Zambique remains committed to its efforts to support humanitarian and local development projects around the world. Since 1995, Zambique's international aid policy of "Humanitarian Internationalism" emerged as both a show of solidarity with suffering people around the world, and as a peaceful alternative to more radical proponents of militaristic "Revolutionary Internationalism" of supporting guerrilla and liberation movements across the exploited world. Coordinated by the Organização de Solidariedade Humanitária (Organization of Humanitarian Solidarity - OSH), which coordinates dozens of Zambican NGO's and government agencies in Zambique for its efforts. Many nations have benefited from our no-obligation aid projects and humanitarian support missions, and Zambique has received global appraisal for its efforts, seen in this regard as the "Cuba of Africa" (our two nations collaborate where possible). Zambican aid Internationalism also emerged as a means of "paying forward" the aid and assistance Zambique received from its international partners following independence in 1975. In Africa Zambique has aid commitments for most nations, such as neighbouring Zimbabwe, Malawi, and Zambia, and more distant countries such as Burundi, Sierra Leone, Burkina Faso, Guinea, both Sudans, Mauritania, Somalia, Madagascar, Djibouti, Namibia, Eritrea, Côte d'Ivoire, Kansala and other members of the African continent. Beyond Africa, Zambique provides significant assistance to serious crisis zones such as Yemen, Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Venezuela, and Myanmar. With over 40,000 workers in international collaborations with 62 countries around the world, Zambican International aid, with its focus on large-scale, sustained aid for the most marginalized and under-served populations across the globe, has grown considerably in its 30 years of policy existence.
