Also, the space you'd need for nukes for thrust would be well above any other type of thrust, and wouldn't be worth it in the end.
Also, consider this, any space battle happening near a planet is either going to be very far away, or very close, meaning you've got to be really careful.
Based on the mindset of a large portion of everyone in this RMB... I'm leaning towards them taking the close combat.
As for the drones, I'm making no comment, because you have your point made and I don't feel like disproving it, there's no reason to.

Close combat is literally the opposite of where you want your ships in space to end up in. Generally speaking close combat in space is risky as the other side might have just got the right idea of using kinetic weaponry from the other side of the solar system while you desperately try to reach them with your limited range lasers and plasma. Not saying that those shots would hit. One out of a 100 is still worth it in the end. Also tnukes being the main system to gain speed isnt that bad of an idea you can always have smaller maneuver engines. And any space battle near a planet gives the massive home turf advantage to the defensive side. And if it is not planet of either side then theres little point to fight near it. Also you greatly underestimate the space of. Uhm. Space.
