There are many ways integration can happen. Personally I don't think a US model will be the final result. It would help already if the member states' governments wouldn't work against the EU and blame it for everything that goes wrong whereas what goes wrong is often (indirectly) the member states' fault.

A combined European army could be practical, but I'd say within NATO, not as a replacement of NATO.
