They don't actually collide with the ground, as the ground would absorb much of the blast and render it not as effective. To avoid this, the nuke is timed to detonate at least a couple hundred feet up.

Even when detonated above ground, the blast is still TOO powerful for the Earth to handle. 3 Tsars would have been enough to cause serious damage to Earth's crust, as many speculated after the test.

Starts wondering how the Atmospheric Deprivation Weapon hasn't obliterated the crust due to it's effect of using a planet's atmosphere for explosive fuel
