The hard-nosed, hard-working, cynical, humorless, devout population of 16.804 billion Hellkin are rabid consumers, partly through choice and partly because the government tells them to and dissenters tend to vanish from their homes at night.

The minute, corrupt, well-organized government, or what there is of one, juggles the competing demands of Industry, Defense, and Administration. It meets to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Pandæmonium. Income tax is unheard of.

The frighteningly efficient Infernal economy, worth a remarkable 5,423 trillion Crowns a year, is driven almost entirely by the private sector, which is broadly diversified and led by the Retail industry, with major contributions from Arms Manufacturing, Gambling, and Soda Sales. Average income is an amazing 322,761 Crowns, with the richest citizens earning 5.4 times as much as the poorest.

Bridge salesmen line up for blocks to make their cases at Overlord's office, bedknobs and broomsticks are often seen flying through the air, baby formula has some strange packaging, and wars are forgotten but not forgiven. Crime, especially youth-related, is so common that it is unusual to encounter someone following the law, with the police force struggling against a lack of funding and a high mortality rate. The Infernum's national animal is the Hellspawn, which is also the nation's favorite main course, and its national religion is the Church of the Morningstar.
