The Democratic Republic of Silu is a large, safe nation, renowned for its rum-swilling pirates, frequent executions, and devotion to social welfare. The quiet, industrious population of 69 million Siluans are fiercely patriotic and enjoy great social equality; they tend to view other, more capitalist countries as somewhat immoral and corrupt.

The enormous, socially-minded government juggles the competing demands of Education, Welfare, and Defense. The average income tax rate is 72.6%, and even higher for the wealthy.

The sizeable but sluggish Siluan economy, worth 1.67 trillion Dollars a year, is driven entirely by a combination of government and state-owned industry, with private enterprise illegal. However, for those in the know, there is a slick, highly efficient, quite specialized black market in Information Technology, Tourism, Cheese Exports, and Woodchip Exports. The private sector mostly consists of enterprising ten-year-olds selling lemonade on the sidewalk, but the government is looking at stamping this out. Cheap and tasteless vegetables flood the markets, the nation's faithful often say there is a higher power watching over them, all you have to do is pray to get into Silu, and the weather in Silu City is always 'pigeons with a chance of droppings'. Crime, especially youth-related, is totally unknown, thanks to a well-funded police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Silu's national animal is the Swan, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests.
