The Free Land of Numtopia is a small, socially progressive nation, renowned for its keen interest in outer space, irreverence towards religion, and absence of drug laws. The hard-working, democratic population of 26 million Numtopians hold their civil and political rights very dear, although the wealthy and those in business tend to be viewed with suspicion.

The minute, liberal, outspoken government, or what there is of one, juggles the competing demands of Education, Welfare, and Healthcare. The average income tax rate is 6.8%.

The Numtopian economy, worth 1.37 trillion Pebbles a year, is driven almost entirely by the private sector, which is fairly diversified and led by the Soda Sales industry, with major contributions from Trout Farming, Gambling, and Cheese Exports. Average income is 52,717 Pebbles, and evenly distributed, with the richest citizens earning only 4.2 times as much as the poorest.

Tourists from around the world come to visit the country's famous rainforests, the nation faces constant invasions by foreign boy bands, the constant playing of Merry Birthday on Numtopian radio has led to calls for the song to be classified as a crime against humanity, and all recreational drugs are legal. Crime, especially youth-related, is a problem, probably because of the absence of a police force. Numtopia's national animal is the Numbat, which can occasionally be seen sifting through garbage in the nation's cities.

Numtopia is ranked 243,849th in the world and 1,452nd in the Outback for Most Developed, scoring 51.6 on the Human Development Index.
