The People's Republic of Zooistan is a huge, socially progressive nation, notable for its state-planned economy, ban on automobiles, and devotion to social welfare. The compassionate, cynical population of 268 million Zooistanians are ruled with an iron fist by the dictatorship government, which ensures that no-one outside the party gets too rich. In their personal lives, however, citizens are relatively unoppressed; it remains to be seen whether this is because the government genuinely cares about its people, or if it hasn't gotten around to stamping out civil rights yet.
The government — a sprawling, bureaucracy-choked, socially-minded, well-organized morass — juggles the competing demands of Welfare, Education, and Administration. The average income tax rate is 79.7%, and even higher for the wealthy.
The sizeable but sluggish Zooistanian economy, worth 6.85 trillion floras a year, is driven entirely by a combination of government and state-owned industry, with private enterprise illegal. The industrial sector, which is quite specialized, is mostly made up of the Tourism industry, with significant contributions from Book Publishing, Pizza Delivery, and Door-to-door Insurance Sales. Average income is 25,550 floras, and distributed extremely evenly, with practically no difference between the richest and poorest citizens.
Leader is quite hard to get a hold of, all mothers are allowed six months fully-paid maternity leave, abattoirs are struggling with the directive to 'wait until the animal dies of a ripe old age', and the breathalyser pledge is a traditional part of marriages in Zooistan. Crime is totally unknown, thanks to a very well-funded police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Zooistan's national animal is the commie crow, which soars majestically through the nation's famously clear skies.
Zooistan is ranked 262,505th in the world and 1,297th in The Communist Bloc for Most Scientifically Advanced, scoring -44.37 on the Kurzweil Singularity Index.
