The Democratic Republic of Bopia is a gargantuan, cultured nation, renowned for its free-roaming dinosaurs, keen interest in outer space, and frequent executions. The compassionate population of 10.433 billion Bopians are highly moralistic and fiercely conservative, in the sense that they tend to believe most things should be outlawed. People who have good jobs and work quietly at them are lauded; others are viewed with suspicion.

The medium-sized government juggles the competing demands of Education, Law & Order, and Administration. The average income tax rate is 40.3%, but much higher for the wealthy.

The strong Bopian economy, worth 693 trillion bops a year, is driven entirely by a combination of government and state-owned industry, with private enterprise illegal. However, for those in the know, there is a slick, highly efficient, quite specialized black market in Information Technology, Book Publishing, Beef-Based Agriculture, and Trout Farming. The private sector mostly consists of enterprising ten-year-olds selling lemonade on the sidewalk, but the government is looking at stamping this out. Average income is 66,516 bops, and distributed extremely evenly, with little difference between the richest and poorest citizens.

Citizens are deployed to barren deserts to protect small territorial claims, in government offices a hidden killer takes the lives of ministers and civil servants, auditors are gutting every governmental department, and the government's economic policy is "sort it yourself". Crime, especially youth-related, is totally unknown, thanks to a well-funded police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Bopia's national animal is the bopen, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests.
