The Emirate of Averxia is a huge, cultured nation, remarkable for its public floggings, complete absence of social welfare, and spontaneously combusting cars. The hard-nosed, hard-working, devout population of 939 million Averxians are either ruled by a sleek, efficient government or a conglomerate of multinational corporations; it's difficult to tell which.

The minute, corrupt, pro-business government, or what there is of one, is effectively ruled by the Department of Defense, with Industry also on the agenda, while Welfare and Social Policy aren't funded at all. Citizens pay a flat income tax of 2.6%.

The thriving Averxian economy, worth 100 trillion Averxian Credits a year, is driven almost entirely by the private sector, which is broadly diversified and led by the Arms Manufacturing industry, with significant contributions from Retail, Uranium Mining, and Gambling. Average income is an impressive 107,239 Averxian Credits, but there is a vast disparity between incomes, with the richest 10% of citizens earning 971,533 per year while the poor average 1,395, a ratio of 696 to 1.

Savvy students quote paywalled research knowing that university lecturers can't afford to check the citations, cheap and tasteless vegetables flood the markets, behind every local dictator is an Averxian advisor whispering in their ear, and Violetist maidens who fall for an outsider must leave their violet light districts in shame. Crime, especially youth-related, is all-pervasive, perhaps because of the country's complete lack of prisons. Averxia's national animal is the Averxian Sand Worm, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation.
