The Republic of 5th Questas is a large, orderly nation, notable for its compulsory military service, irreverence towards religion, and suspicion of poets. The hard-nosed, hard-working, cynical population of 124 million 5th Questasians are kept under strict control by the oppressive government, which measures its success by the nation's GDP and refers to individual citizens as "human resources."

The tiny government is primarily concerned with Defense, although Law & Order, Administration, and Industry are also considered important, while International Aid and Spirituality are ignored. Citizens pay a flat income tax of 6.3%.

The strong 5th Questasian economy, worth 7.87 trillion cards a year, is broadly diversified and led by the Arms Manufacturing industry, with major contributions from Uranium Mining, Gambling, and Cheese Exports. State-owned companies are reasonably common. Average income is 63,501 cards, but there is a significant disparity between incomes, with the richest 10% of citizens earning 216,609 per year while the poor average 13,703, a ratio of 15.8 to 1.

Teenage TV characters are played by thirty-year-olds by the end of the second season, classes at 5th Questas City University get canceled on Brancaland's Independence Day, gun shops sell hook hands and eye patches, and three extra hay bales are rolled into 5th Questas's gold vaults every year. Crime is a serious problem, with the police force struggling against a lack of funding and a high mortality rate. 5th Questas's national animal is the card, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation.
