Increasing Ties

with a world that dislikes, the German Empire. The German Empire will increase it's ties with the Empire of Japan, The British Empire the United States of America and the Antarctic Empire.

The streets of Shanghai were empty. It was dark, and while the holograms and billboards twinkled and flashed against the dark nighttime sky, there was not a single soul to be found. The city was silent. No honking of car horns, no starships and hovercraft zipping about, no tanks rolling through the streets like they were in Peking, up north. It was calm, eerily so. Perhaps a little unsettling. On a bench, shadowed by drooping cherry blossoms, a girl with crimson eyes sat, holding a large cup of strawberry milk boba. She seemed to be waiting for something, or rather, someone. From the distance, a clip-clop of shoes on pavement could be heard. Then it got closer, and closer, and closer. The girl didn't turn her head until the steps stopped next to her, and the only thing that could be heard was the soft rustle of the leaves.

Mei: "Jingliu. You're here."

Jingliu: (looking up) "Mei. What brought you to ask for a meeting with me?"

Her tone was be neutral, not confrontational but certainly not endearing either. Her expression was just as blank, not showing the slightest bit of greetings at her friend's arrival.

Mei: "I thought you'd have your blindfold on, Liu. Doesn't it hurt to not wear?"

Jingliu: (bored tone) "Whatever gave you that idea? Get to the point."

Mei sighed, her dull purple eyes flashing in annoyance. She held out her hand and a holo-display emerged from it, which began to play a video, with grainy but recognisable footage.

Mei: "We've found our target. By we, I mean me and the Galaxy Ranger. You did nothing but sit on your ass in the fancy penthouse the gov gave you while conveniently forgetting to take any of my messages. So, are you going to join us in the mission or not?"

Jingliu: "I was busy. And I told you, I'm not interested. Did madame Beizhou put you up to this?"

Mei: "We need your support, believe it or not. Kevin's busy, and I can't do it by myself. Freyja wants this done, not Beizhou."

Jingliu: "Get Bronya to do it. What, do you think I just laze around and -"

Mei: (interrupting) "Yes. You do."

Jingliu sighed, clearly not wanting to put up with this anymore. Strawberry milk boba in hand, she got up, trying to end the conversation between her and Mei. As she started to walk away, Mei followed behind her.

Mei: "Look, ever since you and Stelle left the agency, it's been a downhill slide. Like it or not, we need you back. Me, Ranger, and Bronya can't handle everything by ourselves."

Jingliu: (frostily) "Remember what you told me about better time management? Take your own advice."

Mei: "That's not the point. It's not time management, it would just be really helpful if we had even one more person to help us. Better if it's you."

Jingliu paused, sighed, and turned around, looking at least a little bit less hostile than before. The blare of a lone siren in the distance cut through the thick silence.

Jingliu: "Look, I... Fine. But only if you pay me. I'm not doing this stuff for free. Remember last time? Never again."

Mei: "It wasn't my fault you got shot - look, I get it. I'll talk to madame Freyja."

Jingliu: "Is that all?"

Mei: "Yes, that's it."

Mei glanced ruefully at the holoscreen displaying the time before turning back to Jingliu, still facing her. She smiled awkwardly, as if trying to dispel the tension.

Mei: "I... here. Let's go back to my place. I'll fix you a plate and we can catch up on life or something. Bronya's come over, too, and I'm sure she wouldn't mind the company."

Jingliu: (smiling slightly)"You offering me food? That's a first."

Mei: "I'll take that as approval. Come on then."

Jingliu took her hand and the two of them walked away, soon the echoes of their footsteps being the only indication that someone had been there at all. The city's silence resumed as the chills of the night air swept across the street, wiping away the dust of greetings.

OOC this is just part of Jingliu's backstory and does not happen in the present
