The United States of Harikaulke is a huge, safe nation, notable for its barren, inhospitable landscape, compulsory military service, and complete absence of social welfare. The hard-nosed, hard-working, democratic population of 501 million Harikaulkeans are effectively ruled by a group of massive corporations, who run for political office and provide their well-off citizens with world-class goods and services. Their poorer citizens, however, are mostly starving to death while being urged to go out and get real jobs. The populace has reasonably extensive civil rights, although these are mostly aimed at allowing them to buy whatever they like.

The relatively small, pro-business government juggles the competing demands of Industry, Education, and Healthcare. Citizens pay a flat income tax of 9.3%.

The frighteningly efficient Harikaulkean economy, worth 32.9 trillion pouns a year, is broadly diversified and led by the Basket Weaving industry, with major contributions from Trout Farming, Furniture Restoration, and Automobile Manufacturing. Average income is 65,641 pouns, but there is a large disparity between incomes, with the richest 10% of citizens earning 257,371 per year while the poor average 11,389, a ratio of 22.6 to 1.

The nation operates a "finders-keepers" policy with other nations' citizens, the government has begun breaking all large businesses into thousands of mom-and-pop general stores, photographers have to apply for a license to photograph Leader, and children are brainwashed at a young age to accept "love and peace!" as a way of life. Crime, especially youth-related, is relatively low. Harikaulke's national animal is the leopard, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation.
