I interpret them as different. Someone who doesn't have a religion may think that there may be some sort of afterlife after you die, but this isn't a designated religion.

An atheist is someone who doesn't believe in anything after you die. Basically, they think that once there dead, there dead.

But, I may be wrong, as I don't practise atheism.

I can see where your coming from so what you mean is not I don’t have a religion but deism which is the belief that there’s something we just don’t interact with it.
