Greetings, salutations, and welcome to our fair part of NationStates!

FrodoBaggins wrote:Durin when he finally wakes up: teh world has changed while i slept.

This made me chuckle as I first thought about Durin's Bane, the Balrog in Moria that the fool of a Took character Pippin awoke after dropping a stone in a well. (it's in the Fellowship of the Ring, I believe at Chapter 4). Made quite a mess upon waking up.

The Precious of Smeagollum

That is part of the History of Middle Earth books, isn't it correct? Was it Morgoth's favourite cat?

Yeah, that's right. Apparently all cats served Morgoth. He features in the older versions of Beren and Luthien. I actually haven't read the history of middle earth, but those were included in the standalone Beren and Luthien book which I have read.

You also read The Silmarillion, then?

Well, Morgoth is a deity and Sauron is of the likes of Gandalf (ie, equal in strength).

And in the Third Age (at the time of the events in the LoTR books) one can say that Gandalf was even superior to Sauron, as Sauron lost much of his might in the previous Ages and with the crafting of the power rings (and the One Ring that he lost). In the same time, one can also say that Gandalf is not superior to Sauron, at least based on his own words as quoted from The Two Towers (the White Rider chapter) and from the Istari chapter in Unfinished Tales ... he didn't have too much confidence in his own strength over the dark lord Sauron's strength.

Oh yes, that is correct! I was meaning to read the standalone book with the story of Beren and Luthien, but did not find it as a hardcover here where I live.
