The Republic of Hyphen is a colossal, orderly nation, notable for its state-planned economy, keen interest in outer space, and sprawling nuclear power plants. The compassionate, cynical population of 5.767 billion Hyphenians are ruled with an iron fist by the dictatorship government, which ensures that no-one outside the party gets too rich. In their personal lives, however, citizens are relatively unoppressed; it remains to be seen whether this is because the government genuinely cares about its people, or if it hasn't gotten around to stamping out civil rights yet.

Internet trolls are considered valiant supporters of the right to free speech, students memorise knock-knock jokes for their mandatory twice-a-term Comedy Examinations, songs in 4/4 time are simply too common for the musical cognoscenti, and the government prides itself on being smug and condescending to idiots. Crime, especially youth-related, is totally unknown, thanks to a capable police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Hyphen's national animal is the dragon, which soars majestically through the nation's famously clear skies, and its national religion is Flemingovianism.

Hyphen is ranked 49,137^th in the world and 1,550^th in The North Pacific for Most Scientifically Advanced, scoring 150.17 on the Kurzweil Singularity Index.
