Útvarp

Útvarp (Úv) (English: Outer Broadcasting) was founded in 1953, under the station's first director Tór Akselson. Prior to the founding of the station Fjareyers could only listen to foreign radio stations such as the National Norwegian Radio Station, and the BBC World Service. These stations were mainly used for weather forecasts and were completely banned by the communist authorities, although the Fjareyan people rarely followed such rules.

Fylkvarp

In 1956 large protests broke out in the Soviet-allied state of Hungary, eventually a war broke out in the nation between the democratic state of Hungary, supported by NATO and the old Soviet-allied state, supported by the Soviet Union. At the same time large scale protests broke out in other communist states. Protests soon began in Fjarrej as well since the Fjareyan population got information about the protests from the foreign British and Norwegian radio stations despite all information about such things being banned by the government.

After democracy was restored to Fjarrej a vote was held in the national parliament of Fjarrej (Felkethink) where it was decided to construct a new public broadcasting company, what would become Fylkvarp. It was decided that this organisation would handle television facilities on the islands as well as radio transmissions. After an old warehouse in the capital (Érickshövn) was converted to a TV-studio in 1959 the broadcaster opened 1 January 1960.

Throughout the rest of the century more buildings would be incorporated into the Fylkvarp headquarters as the Organisation grew larger. In 1989 the national parliament of Fjarrej (Felkethink) voted to remove Fylkvarp's monopoly on Fjareyan television and let private broadcasting companies start broadcasting for the first time in Fjarrej. In November 2001 Fjarrej became the first nation to completely disconnect its analogue television signals and instead start using the digital DVB-T standard.

News

News shows are an important part of Fv and since 1982 Fv has been dominated by two main news programmes; Tíd and Dághin (translated “time” and “the day” respectively). The two main national bulletins are Tíd, broadcast at 18:00 and 19:30, and Dághin which reports in greater depth 21:00.

Entertainment

Entertainment shows usually broadcast on Fridays and Saturdays are, together with sports, the programmes that attract the most viewership.

• Sángkampin (1978-), the preselection for the Eurovision Song Contest, is very popular is Fjarrej, the grand final often gets around 40 000 viewers.

• Résa (1989-), popular entertainment show in which multiple celebrities are invited to compete and answer tricky clues and questions related to locations around the world. The program is based on the Swedish program På spåret.

• Eskilson (1999-), famous talkshow in which the famous talkshow host Gunnar Eskilson gets to speak to and interview famous people from Fjarrej, as well as international stars.

• Felkethinkidh (2015-), popular political drama following the ficticious main character Gúdhrun Háraldson as she becomes prime minister of Fjarrej. Based on the popular Danish political drama Borgen.

Fv also hosted the Eurovision Song Contest 2011.

Foreign Programming

Fv also airs foreign programmes, mostly from the UK and the USA but also programmes from other nordic countries, usually in their original audio with Fjareyan subtitles.

Around 40% of all programming on Fv is foreign. Fv often cooperates with other nordic broadcasters such as DR, NRK, SVT, YLE, RÚV, KVF and KNR through Nordvision.

Fv has three regular channels that broadcast to the general public:

• Prógram 1 - The main channel with broad and regional content and a wide assortment of comedy, entertainment, news and other foreign produced shows and programmes.

• Prógram 2 - A channel with slightly narrower programming, focusing more on culture, documentaries, films and other content.

• Tenksprógramidh (The Knowledge Channel) - A channel focusing on documentaries, seminars, debates and informative programming.

In addition to the three television channels there are also three radio channels, accesible through the Fv Rádio app on most smartphones.

• R1 - News, culture, debate, readings and documentaries. Almost no music is played on R1.

• R2 - Classical music, folk, jazz and world music.

• R3 - Popular music, comedy, and programming from some podcasts such as Rádio Dokumentár (documentaries) and Rádio Sögu (history). Targeted more towards a younger audience.

A poll conducted in 2018 showed that around 93,4% of the Fjareyan population trusted Fv, even as most of the Fv staff leans more left-wing than the general public. Social democratic voters have the highest trust at 98,2% while Progress voters lie at 91,2%, Agrarian voters at 87,2% and People's party voters least trusting at 72,1%
