Post on our regional message board the answers to these three questions:

How did you hear about The Western Isles?
nation=remodio recruitment message

What's some information about yourself (hobbies, interests, country, etc.)?
Hobbies:Anime, Manga, Pixel Armies and Flags [NationStates, JuniorGeneral style .png and .xcf, I use GIMP because it's better than MS Paint], making maps [both fictional and factual];
Interests: History, Alternative History, Military Strategy, Military Equipment, Archeology, Paleontology, Truth, Honesty;
Country: I am from North Macedonia. I like to travel on the ground [with a car/4x4, SUV's are just inept at off-road when compared to a 90's econobox], so far I have been trough the whole of North Macedonia, the whole of Albania, the southern half of Kosovo [up to prizren], the southern parts of Serbia [up to Vranje], Northern Greece [Aegean/Southern/Greek Macedonia], the southwest of Bulgaria [Pirin/Bulgarian Macedonia, Blagoevgrad Province]. I hope to visit Japan some day and bring back a breakdown of it's education system so we stop ruining our current one;

What kind of nation are you trying to make?
RP, lots and lots of art-based RP. I used to plan NationStates and Politics&War [I still have DeviantArt profiles where I had posted some of the pixel armies, forgot the passwords to both profiles...] years back but eh, device cracked and I forgot all about it. Science and Economy will be my tickets for the win :P

THE WESTERN ISLES MAP DISPATCH

Rules

Read all of these and make sure you understand them before you send the required map application to Ainslie via telegram.

  1. The nation which you join the map with should be a member of the World Assembly.

  2. You must have a name that is realistic. If you were to put it in a list of nations on Earth, it should not seem out of place or strange compared to them. However, this does not mean that you are allowed to have the same name as a real life country on Earth or something extremely similar.

  3. You are only allowed one nation on the map. No puppets are allowed.

  4. You must have at least one factbook about your nation that proves that you are going to actively engage and develop your nation in-character

  5. You must post anywhere on the LinkNationStates forums. This means anywhere across the site that you are allowed to post on. Do not post on threads marked (IC) or [IC] or places where you otherwise would not be welcome.

  6. If you lodge a map application and do not log in for a while afterwards, you may not be added to the map.

  7. If you are on the map, you must either significantly edit a dispatch or factbook or post in an [IC]/(IC) or [OOC]/(OOC) forum that exclusively involves nations on the map pictured above. If you do not do this at least once every fourteen days, you may be removed from the map and will need to resubmit a map request in order to be placed back on.

  8. Our region reserves the right to refuse map applications from players or puppets of players who is an officer or holds a position in the regional government of another region on this website. However, in some circumstances, discretion may be used in order to allow people who fall into this category to join the map.

  9. For more rules, please refer to this dispatch.

About TWI In-Character

The Western Isles, like many regions, exists in its own separate reality or plane of existence in order for members to reconcile their own histories with each other. We are Earth-based humans with Earth weapons and Earth culture, although we do not exist on the map of Earth itself. Although Earth's countries exist in our reality, we do not typically interact with them nor do they interact with us; we almost exclusively interact with only the nations in our region.

The Western Isles is very roughly 7000 miles long and 4000 miles wide (10 km by 10 km per pixel). We exist in a northern hemisphere, with the nations at the north typically experiencing colder climates and the nations at the south typically experiencing equatorial climates. If it helps, you can picture our map as being the area between Japan, the western American coast, the Aleutian islands, and Hawaii, although we do not actually exist in that realm. Nations are given free reign to decide their inner geography, so long as it does not bend too deep into unrealistic territory. Similarly, nations may decide their own resources or lack thereof, so long as it is kept reasonable and realistic. We are modern time, specifically current time, meaning that the real-life calendar day is the same as our role-play day.

The central island is named Argus; the large island to the northeast of Argus is called Gael. The island to the west of Argus is called Raedlon.

Bold Territories

What are they?
Bold territories are those little areas on the map circled or marked by black borders - their names are typically smaller and emboldened. They are portions of the map which are set aside with the sole purpose of being hubs for activity - not for the mere sake of having more land or getting something that you want. Rather, these are made normally to facilitate some sort of in character role-play. There are generally two types of bold territories - the larger, older and more traditional ones devoted to role-plays that are typically only overseen by one or two people. There is then the second category which is smaller and newer islands which are typically made with the view of having them change hands in character relatively quickly and are designed to be a proxy for wider tensions - whether this be diplomatic, economic or even in the sense of armed conflict.

In order to apply to get responsibility to out of character manage a bold territory not listed below, you should create a factbook and then post a link to it in this thread and talk about your intentions for the territory. If approved, you may then be considered as overseeing the territory.

Which ones exist, and what are they like?

  • Iersheno (Dispatch) | IC Disputed | OOC Managed by Kravato

    • Qualities: Militarised | Disputed | Tourist Mecca

    • Backstory: An area first settled by Vacrusians, it has become a contested territory both politically and ethnically. Conflict is a well established part of its history, though only recently a longstanding peace has been broken by increased hostility by both Vacrus and Kravato. Placed on an important trade route and strategically important location on the western side of South Argus, the island is a flashpoint that is only just starting to awaken yet again.

    • Ideal for: Conflict RP, Diplomatic RP

    • Important links: In The News

  • Romancia (Read Dispatch) | IC governed by independent government | OOC Managed by Baumes

    • Disputed | War-torn | Militarised

    • Backstory: Since their arrival to Baumes, the Romancians have constantly been bullied and harassed by the Baumish. Eventually, they founded the Kingdom of Romancia, but it won't be long until they were colonized by the Doraltics, and later the Baumish. But they've had enough. And after a long and bloody civil war, Romancia has finally succeeded in independence. Now war-torn and destroyed, Romancia must now rebuild itself and forge a new future.

    • Ideal for: Conflict RP, Diplomatic RP, Cultural RP

    • Important links: Baumish-Romancian Conflict OOC, In The News

  • Charbagnia (Read Dispatch) | IC Governed by an independent democratic government | OOC Managed by Dormill and Stiura

    • Qualities: Tax Haven | Tourist Mecca | Diplomatically Isolated | Multiethnic

    • Backstory: Caught between the imperial ambitions of nations both foreign and native to the Western Isles, Charbagnia is in some ways a multiethnic paradise and a tribute to tolerance and equality. However, decades of political mismanagement and international strife has constantly reopened the wounds of ethnic and sectarian conflict, preventing Charbagnia from fully healing and becoming a beacon for liberty and human rights in the Southern Sea. Now faced with a growing threat of terrorism armed with the weapons of a very recent war, a powder keg has been set under the Charbagnian nation, and it is up to the nations of the Southern Sea and beyond to band together and relieve the pressure, or else condemn them all to a new age of strife and death.

    • Ideal for: Political/Intrigue RP, Cultural RP, and News interactions

    • Important links: None applicable.

  • Faronna Islands (Dispatch not available) | IC occupied territory of Balnik | OOC Managed by Balnik

    • Qualities: Remote | Developing | Fascist | Sparsely inhabited

    • Backstory: The Faronna Islands were two Islands that were shared between Balnik and Roendavar under the 1983 Faronna Islands agreement that set the islands to be used as a nature reserve. The treaty expired and was not renewed. In 2019 surveys reported that the islands had an abundance of fossil fuels and was rich in resources. In 2020, faced with an imminent energy crisis, Balnik annexed the islands and began exploiting the islands and its resources

    • Ideal for: Diplomatic RP

    • Important links: ICJ Determination, In The News

  • Keverai (Read Dispatch) | IC Governed by an independent democratic government | OOC Managed by Ainslie

    • Qualities: Unequal | Unsettled | Capitalised Paradise | Crime Den

    • Backstory: Ever since its colonisation, Keverai has been an outward looking place - seeking to absorb the prosperity and the vibrancy that comes with a multicultural experience. This has exposed it to external problems such as war, social and income inequality, and large organised crime operations within the nation. Many of these conditions were made possible through the deregulation of the economy and the flow through effects it would have. Keverai’s first truly democratic government has had a lacklustre response to these which have very much fallen short of expectations. Now, the nation is completely exposed to the risk of disaster or further instability exacerbating the existing inequality and unrest.

    • Ideal for: Economic, Cultural and Diplomatic roleplays

    • Important links: Collaboration Thread, In The News, Recent History, Foreign Influences.

  • Norregan (Read Dispatch) | IC Governed by an independent democratic government | OOC Managed by Roendavar

    • Qualities: Isolationist | Absolutist | Traditionalist | Conservative

    • Backstory: The Norregan people came to the Wake Islands and settled around the Stakerenea Islands as early as 1000 BCE. There have been several theories of how they got there, the most plausible one being that the Norregan people are a sea-faring people from Argus. The Norregan eventually settled into small tribal communities, relying on fishing for much of their food. Around the 1600s, trade finally came to the islands from nearby Raedlon. As the world descended into wars for control, the people of Norregan began to become wary of their survival, especially as they saw the Sud and Atolla fall to foreign influence. In 1729, a tribal chieftain known as Ilinakara’Toatou Falakira, also known to the Norregan people as the Uniter (Karana), united the Stakerenea Islands, through the Gray War. The Ilinakara family would soon rule Norregan from then on as absolute monarchs, pursuing a traditional and isolationist policy and remaining guarded against the outside world. However, after the storm of 2021 that left the Wake Islands devastated, current Queen Ilinakara'Falini Okilanoa, has decided to loosen the nation's economic policies and has allowed increased foreign investment, albeit, under her severe absolute watch.

    • Ideal for: Economic, Cultural, and Diplomatic Roleplays and News interactions

    • Important links: The Rains RP, In The News

  • Sud (Read Dispatch) | IC Governed by an independent democratic government | OOC Managed by Solaryia

    • Qualities: Backwater | Developing | Enterprising | Unequal

    • Backstory: A confident democracy with a charismatic but politically-minded leader, Sud has long considered itself as the success story of the three Wake Island chains. Whilst it suffered to an extent from a stormfront which battered Atolla and Norregan, the disaster exposed the existing inequalities in Sudite society. Sud is the most open of the three nations, relying on international backing to maintain its confidence as an important middlepower within the Raedlon subregion. However, the reality for the Sudites is that the social issues which haunt them remain very prevalent and the same politcking that occurs in Norregan and Atolla is just as rife here.

    • Ideal for: Political/Intrigue RP, Economic RP and News interactions

    • Important links: The Rains RP, In The News

  • Atolla (Read Dispatch) | IC Governed by an independent democratic government | OOC Managed by Alteran republics

    • Qualities: Liberal Conservative | Meritocratic | Democratic | Fledgling Capitalist | Altera Dependent

    • Backstory: Since first being 'discovered' by the fledgling Alteran Republics in the 1460's, the island nation would soon become a keystone in the formation of the Alteran Commonwealth several centuries later. Battered by regular storms and harsh weather, the island inhabitants of Atolla grew to become a hardy and resilient people. Combined with imported traits and a thirst for mercantilism, the Atollan people would become an island of shopkeepers, establishing strong trade links with its neighbours in Raedlon. For whatever reason, whether thanks to subtle social or economic changes, Atolla never truly blossomed as an island nation and would remain strongly dependent on its Alteran colonial masters. However, thanks to continued investment and a brief flirt with independence; Atolla formally gained independence in 2016 after a slim referendum victory. Despite this, the nation stands at a crossroads - do they use their new independence to cut off colonial ties and seek their own glory - or acknowledge their allies and seek the safety and comfort of a like-minded friend?

    • Ideal for: Economic, Cultural and Diplomatic roleplays

    • Important links: The Rains RP, In The News

  • Sunset Isle (Read Dispatch) | IC by uncontacted, hostile tribes | OOC Managed by Martenyika

    • Qualities: Wild | Tribal | Biodiverse | Resource-rich

    • Backstory: Originally a disputed territory, the Sunset Isle never attracted much attention due to its apparent lack of relevant natural resources and to the extreme hostility of its native tribe, the Akari. The situation quickly changed when a team of illegal researchers discovered massive deposits of highly valuable resources on the island in 2021. This led to a military standout between Laeden and Martenyika that nearly evolved into a full scale armed conflict. Thankfully, both nations agreed to discuss the matter in an arbitration court, who ruled that the Akari and their traditional island should be respected and that foreigners should not approach or land there under any circumstance.

    • Important links: The Red Sunset Crisis RP, Red Oak Court RP, In The News

  • Sawneeak Atoll (Read Dispatch) | IC disputed | OOC Managed by Najimam

    • Qualities: Archipelago | Contested | Tranquil

    • Backstory: Ever since the late 14th century, the archipelago has been the site of several territorial claims and disputed. Initially a territory of the Kingdom of Tesselia in Ainslie, it was later sold to Uprea and over time, became colonised be several other states which often come and go. Today, Sawneeak Atoll is still largely disputed and borders are often still unofficial. However, it is clear that the area will continue to grow and the future of the archipelago is in the hands of the ruling governments.

Map Rules

The map is key to developing relationships between our nations and engaging in role-play. As it has limited space, it is therefore reserved for nations who actively engage in RP and new nations (who have a fair probability of engaging in RP in the future). Please do not request a map spot unless you plan on being active for a long time.

For new nations in the region, you must do ALL of the following to receive a map spot:

1. Have a realistic nation name and use that name to role-play with. Do not use the name of a real-life country or something extremely similar to it.
2. Have at least one factbook about your nation that proves you are going to actively engage and develop your nation in-character.
3. Post at least once anywhere on the NationStates forums. This means anywhere across the site where you are allowed to post. However, avoid posting in threads that TWI has made that are marked (IC). These are for those already on the map only.
3. Have been active. For example, if you send us the request on Monday, stop logging in after Tuesday, and we check the request on Saturday, we will not add you, because it appears you are no longer active.
4. The nation which you apply to join the map with should be a member of the World Assembly.
5. Send Ainslie a telegram that answers the following questions:

Standard Application for Map Spot

  • Nation name:

  • How did you find the region/why did you choose The Western Isles:

  • How long have you been active on NationStates:

  • Is this nation a puppet or side project:

  • If you have ANY other accounts on nationstates.net other than this one, please list them here:

  • Do you plan on being active (participating in regional role-play)? Are there any particular interests you have?

  • Have you read and understood our introductory dispatch, "A Welcome and Introduction Dispatch for New Nations":

  • Have you read, understood, and agree to the map rules located in the regional rules dispatch:

  • Where exactly do you want to be on the map (describe the location in relation to other nations' locations):

  • If that spot becomes no longer available, what is your second choice for location:

In order to stay on the map, you must post on any regional in-character role-play thread at least once a month AND you must also do at least one of the following every ten days or less:

1. Publish or significantly and clearly add to a factbook or dispatch about your nation.
2. Post on any regional role-play thread (including but not limited to the news, tweets, citizens, or League threads).

If you're going to be on an extended vacation or unavoidable absence, telegram the current Secretary of Role-Play (Roendavar), Aizcona and Ainslie and they will likely hold your spot for you if you have shown in the past to be an active member.

No puppets. No nation on the map may serve in any capacity in any foreign region's government.

All players must use a single nation name for all of the region's affairs. Creating and using a new nation to RP as a territory or province is heavily discouraged.

See also additional rules for specific instances: page=dispatch/id=426501

In General

1. Treat others how you want to be treated.
2. Be friendly, welcoming, and supportive of everyone, but more so to the new nations of the region.
3. Don't sabotage, harass, or annoy anyone, in the region or elsewhere.
4. Don't engage in one-sided role-playing, for example by invading a nation that does not want to be invaded.
5. Keep your military strength conservatively realistic.
6. Everyone is equal! Elitism isn't welcome here.
7. Alts/puppet accounts cannot vote. If caught voting, you face expulsion from the region.
8. Follow the NationStates rules.

RMB Rules

The RMB is used for:

1. Communicating with the region as a whole, for announcements either on personal matters or about your nation.
2. Welcoming new nations.
3. General conversation about news or other non-controversial topics.
4. Advice on national issues.
5. Help on anything concerning NationStates itself.
6. Campaigning, once an election poll has gone up.
7. Advertising a regional news article or paper, only once per 12 hours.

The RMB is NOT used for:

1. One-on-one conversations. These should occur through telegram.
2. Role-playing events. These will occur in threads on the NationStates forums that will be linked to on the regional world factbook entry. This is so they do not get lost in a sea of other messages on the regional message board.
3. Controversial discussion. These should occur in public threads on the forums.
4. Spam, inside jokes, troll language, memes, etc. Each message should be at least a full sentence and be either helpful, informative, or evoke conversation.
5. Non-English conversation. Use English.
6. Incredibly long posts, particularly those copy-pasted from something else.

Telegram Rules

1. No regional telegrams can be sent out by non-officers, for any reason, including to campaign
2. Officers can only send out regional telegrams if absolutely necessary, such as in order to conduct their duties or conduct elections
3. Residents may, of course, still telegram any other resident privately for any reason, including to campaign

Breaking the Rules

Upon violating the rules, the following events are likely to happen:

1. Suppression of RMB posts
2. Telegram/post asking to stop
3. Kick from the region
4. Ban from the region

These events may occur in a different order depending on the severity of the offense(s). The telegram/post may come from any nation; if someone warns you that you are breaking the rules, that counts as a warning.

Roleplay Directory
of The Western Isles

....

The Western Isles is a region with a broad, complex and active role-play environment, which is centred on our map. To help you get acquainted and to keep you informed about the happenings of TWI, there are a number of resources created and updated for the benefit of map nations. This - the RP directory - is one of those resources and was an excellent dispatch run by Ostehaar for much longer than I have administrated it.

This dispatch lists active RPs, international organisations and collaboration threads that you may want to take a look at. Whilst I’ll keep an eye out for new threads, you can help me by letting me know about new RPs as they're opened and about changes to ongoing RPs. Please do so via TG or by tagging me in the RMB post in which you announce or publish your RP (make sure to include a link to the IC and OOC threads). These are threads that typically are restricted to members of The Western Isles so if you are not on the map yet or not in The Western Isles contact the RP manager/OP before you write anything in either the OOC or IC threads.

New to Role-Playing in The Western Isles?
I'd highly recommend you read this post written by The Macabees. It is very helpful and is instructive on what it is like to be an RPer in our region.

....

....Roleplays
....

Key:
The terms below indicate the status conditions of different roleplays (RPs) in the region.
  • 'Planning' - RPs that are not fully active yet or require constant coordination, and are still being discussed in the OOC thread. You may freely join the discussion.

  • 'Open' - RPs that require no formal application, and usually have no OOC thread. You are free to post in these RPs, but it is still recommended to inform the OP of your participation before doing so by telegram.

  • 'Semi-Open' - RPs that are open to all players but require application or some form of initial coordination with the OP. All communication should occur in the OOC thread that is relevant to the RP. You should only telegram the OP if you need clarification on a specific fact as you are writing an in-character post. Otherwise, all communication should happen on the out of character thread.

  • 'Closed' - RPs that are open to some players, as indicated by the OP or in the OOC thread. Never post in these IC threads of these roleplays without specific permission from the OP. You may freely post in the OOC thread.

Yeah its a good idea to place a spot in the map. That way, you could be involved in more rp. Just follow the rules and stuff to get a spot. Oh where are my manners, Welcome to TWI!

Same question to Roendavar btw

The Roendavarian monarch still has a bunch of countries to visit so it might take a while before he gets to Nhoor but it can be arranged. A visit from one monarchy to another. The main purpose of the Royal Tour is to improve Roendavar's standing and strengthen diplomatic relations, especially now that we have assumed some major roles and are in hot water with some forces within Roendavar and other nations.

Hello everyone!

I’m new to TWI but have been on NS on and off since around 2016. My hobbies and interests include video games (Paradox grand strategy games particularly), philosophy, and psychology, which I’m currently studying at college. Oh, and I’m from the United States but that’s not particularly interesting.

I found The Western Isles by looking through some of the embassies for old regions I once was in on here. I want my nation to be a relatively small federal republic that is a British Colony. I’m mostly interested in diplomatic RP and potentially some light military conflict. I look forward to meeting all of you!

Welcome to TWI! First of, you could read our dispatches and rules and those stuff which I suppose you have done already. Since you are interested in rp why not claim a spot in the map? It's a great way to get better rp experience. There are lots of fun things you can do here! Oh and if you have discord, feel free to join our discord server. Have a great time in The Western Isles!

Ooo, very snazzy. While it certainly is possible to write yourself as a British colony in the past (as I have). I'd advise against currently being a British colony, as we don't really interact (in character) with nations outside our region.

True. Most nations here are actually independent nations that probably were colonies in the past

FOUNDING

It is estimated that Serpens Land and it's surrounding islands were inhabited by humans around 65,000 years ago. They most likely crossed the North Mesder sea using small sailing canoes and navigated using stars and waves. The oldest known human remains found in Serpens Land have been dated 45,000 years ago, although there has been earlier evidence of human presence on the island. These people are the ancestors of the modern day Native Serpens Landers or Serpans Peoples. The Serpans Peoples have a complex oral culture with it's roots in the first group of humans that arrived in Serpens Land.

By the 16th century the Serpans Peoples had split into multiple tribes spread across the island. Sometimes the tribes would cooperate with one another, and sometimes they would fight. Wars between Serpans tribes were fought with sharpened sticks called u'meas. U'meas were not just used as a weapon. It was said that an u'mea contained one's sole, and if lost in battle or otherwise, the owner's sole would be forever lost after death.

The first Europeans known to have reached Serpens Land were the British explorer John Eaton and his crew in 1723. The Serpans People were friendly to Eaton and his crew, allowing them to come ashore. Europeans would not return to Serpens Land again until 1778 when another British explorer James Lonsdale mapped the coastline of Serpens Land. Lonsdale traded European food, metal tools, weapons and other goods for timber, Serpans food, artefacts and water. Nine years later in 1787, Lonsddale arrived once more, this time setting up a fort on the south island called Fort Charlotte and a trading post.

Due to the introduction of European weapons, the Serpans tribes began to wage longer and deadlier wars with one another. These wars were known as the Serpans Wars and killed over 50,000 Serpans Peoples from 1790 to 1832. At around the same time, Christian missionaries began arriving to Serpens Land converting most of the Serpans population.

A YOUNG COLONY

RESPONSIBLE GOVERNMENT

On April 23, 1907, Serpens Land became a dominion within the British Empire. Since then, April 23 is celebrated every year, and known as Dominion Day. The Constitution of the Dominion of Serpens Land was drafted, and passed with overwhelming popularity. Along with responsible government, the office of the Governor General was created. At this time, Governor General was the representative of the British monarch in Serpens Land. It was also at this time that the first elections were held in Serpens Land. All European adult men were allowed to participate in elections held every four years.

Along with mainland Serpens Land, the new Dominion government was given authority over the territories of the Westmoor isles, Diachen, and the North Mesder Islands. These territories were governed directly by the Dominion government, and had little to no say in their affairs.

EDRIUM REBELLION

Landings on Carisbrooke Island,
on July 10, 1914
Throughout the beginning of the 20th century the settlers of the northern part of Serpens Land grew increasingly distant from the ruling class in Fort Charlotte. Beginning in 1908, thousands of settlers known as the Erodesians began to trek north to escape what they saw was a corrupt bureaucratic Dominion government. They quickly formed settlements dotting the Serpens Land frontier. In 1911, the Serpens Land government agreed to establish the Erodesian Protectorate. While still under the sovereignty of the Dominion government, the Erodesians gained more autonomy from Serpens Land.

Many Erodesians were not contempt with the Erodesian Protectorate and wanted even greater autonomy inducing the power to decide foreign policy. In May 1914, a group called the Edrium Republican Front (ERF) lead by Thomas S. King began attacking British and Serpens Land troops stationed in Broadway. By May 22, ERF rebels had managed to push the British and Serpens Land forces out of the city, where they declared an independent republic. Other Erodesian cities followed suit with rebellions sparking up across the Erodesian Protectorate. On June 5th, 1914, then Prime Minister of Serpens Land Archibald Gardener invoked martial law within the protectorate. When Serpens Land troops attempted to reoccupy areas of the protectorate they faced heavy resistance from the Erodesian rebels. One of the bloodiest battles of the rebellion occurred from July 10-23, 1914 when British and Serpens Land troops tried to retake Carisbrooke Island. British forces attempted to land on the island using unmodified row boats vulnerable to enemy fire. The month before, rebels had managed to capture Fort Patrick, a small British garrison on the island. During the landings, British and Serpens Land troops suffered heavy casualties with only about 40% of troops making it off the beach. The Erodesian rebels were able to hold their positions for nearly two more weeks until the British withdrawal from the island on July 23, 1914.

Fighting would continue for another year, with repeated attempts from the now unsupported Serpens Land Army. Finally on September 15, 1915, the Dominion of Serpens Land and the Erodesian Republican Front signed the Treaty of Lonsdale. This treaty laid out the border between the newly established Republic of Erodesia, and the Dominion of Serpens Land.

IMPERIAL WAR

REPUBLICAN ERA

Main article: Republic of Serpens Land

Serpens Land continued to recognize the British monarch as it's head of state, even after it was given self government in 1907. This continued until 1957 when republican sentiment was at an all time high in the country. Political tensions were also sparked by what many viewed as Joseph Panton's Labour government's mismanagement of the country. On May 31, 1957, along with the support of the Serpens Land Armed Forces, General Cornell Allard - a high ranking army officer - stormed parliament and declared himself interim prime minister. Initially, General Allard had no plans to declare a republic. However, when Governor General Sir Albert Eaton tried to intervene and dismiss General Allard, Allard overthrew the governor general and declared himself as the "Supreme President of the Republic". Days later, the overthrown Sir Albert Eaton and his family fled to the Serpens Land territory of the Westmoor Isles in exile. On July 12, the economically struggling Republic of Erodesia, which had been independent from Serpens Land for nearly 42 years, agreed to join the Republic Serpens Land.

Serpens Land
On August 3 of the same year, the the Westmoor Isles unilaterally declaired indepentance from Serpens Land. While initially a republic, on December 18, 1957 Sir Albert was appointed as King of the Westmoor Isles. King Albert's reign would last less then a year, and ended upon is death on September 3, 1958. He was succeeded by his son, Edward I. Throughout the period of the Republic of Serpens Land, Edward I would continue to support underground resistance efforts against the Serpens Land military junta.

Under the military junta, civil rights were suspended, and political freedoms were nearly nonexistent. The parliament of Serpens Land continued to operate under the leadership of General Allard. This was more a symbolic measure than anything else, as parliament held very little power, and elections were often rigged. Serpens Land maintained it's continued economic growth until it eventually plateaued in 1962.

RESTORATION OF THE MONARCHY

In the early months of 1965, the aging General Allard began to fall ill. General Allard died on May 17, 1965. Immediately following his death senior members of parliament led by Richard Seymour attempted to gain control of the government. They eventually succeed and on May 18, King Edward I of the Westmoor Isles returned to Serpens Land and was appointed King of Serpens Land. After the accession to the Serpens Land throne, Serpens Land and the Westmoor Isles entered into a form of personal union under King Edward I. Despite the shared head of state, Serpens Land and the Westmoor Isles remained distinct, sovereign nations with their own laws and governments. This personal union exists to this day under the current monarch Edward II.

Following the restoration of the monarchy, Serpens Land underwent a series of social and political reforms. A new constitution was written, establishing the many rights and freedoms that all Serpens Landers enjoy today. Under the new constitution the parliament of Serpens Land was established as the primary legislative body in the Serpens Land government. On September 17, 1965, Richard Seymour was elected prime minister with the support of the majority of parliament. A referendum on the Serpens Land monarchy was held in 1967 reaffirming the monarch's place in the Serpens Land government.

In 1968, Serpens Land, under the leadership of Prime Minister Richard Seymour joined the Cooperative Union. During the latter half of the 20th century, Serpens Land experienced rapid economic growth. The once primarily resource based enonomy of Serpens Land gradually transitioned into a service based economy.

Durng the 1980s, Serpens Land experienced a spark in Erodesian nationalism. The radical Second Republican Front (SRF) ingited a series of bombings and kidnapings in the provinces Northland and Camridia. This period also saw a large number of pro-Erodiesian politicians elected to provincial and national office. This culminated in the Crisis of '82 which saw the kidnaping of Edward Hastings, the premier of Northland by the SRF. Martial Law was declaired in Northland until Hastings was found dead by police two weeks later. Very few arrests were ever made in connection with the case.

In addition of Erodesian nationalism, Serpens Land faced many other issues in the 1980s and 90s. These included the sinking of the SS Coventry, the greatest maritime disaster in Serpens Land history, and the Stanley Crisis of 1993, a violent confrontation between Serpans groups and the Serpens Land government. Serpens Land continues to have problems with it's treatment of Serpans peoples.
