| Blue bubble | LGBTQIA+ - The Lesbian Community Lesbians are Women who experience same sex attraction - they love Women, and no other genders. The Lesbian community has been documented (abet a little vaguely at times) since the Ancient Mesopotamia period. There is a running joke that many historical accounts of lesbian relationships have been mistaken for "Gals being pals" rather than lovers. In The Stonewall Rebellion, the crowd were spurred to action when a butch lesbian (named Stormé DeLarverie) yelled, "Why don't you guys do something?" after she punched a policeman who had struck her over the head. Stormé worked as an MC, singer, bouncer, bodyguard, and volunteer street patrol worker, thus known as the "guardian of lesbians in the Village." She died in 2014, aged 93. Lesbian and WLW culture has a range of terms used to describe Lesbians in the community, like Butch and Femme. Butch lesbians tend to present more masculine, while Femmes are more feminine. The word Dyke, which has had negative connotations in the past, has been reclaimed by many lesbians to imply assertiveness and toughness. Lipstick lesbian is also a term to describe feminine lesbians, while a chapstick lesbian is a lesbian who presents more masculine but does have some feminine traits (also known as a soft butch). Lesbian relationships are starting to be more represented in western TV shows now with the push for more positive and long term LGBTQIA+ representation, but media representation can go back to Sappho, an Ancient Greek poet from the island of Lesbos. This is where the term Lesbian is derives from, and who the term Sapphic derives from. Sapphic is a term describing Women who love Women, but they do not have to just experience same sex attraction.
