The Socialist Republic of Zambique | Maputo Chronicle- Zambican Coal Plant Shutdown Marks Energy Advancements[/b] Once important to the industrial development of Zambique, the closure of coal plants like the one outside of Nampula Coal marks a key advancement as part of the 10th 5-Year Plan, whereby Zambique will fully transition to 100% renewable energy by the year 2024. Great progress had already been made in the previous two five-year plans, where the co-ordinated efforts of the planning committees of each province set out to achieve the national goals renewable energy development. These goals were proposed by the People's Planning Resolution #1381 (2010), in which workers across the country collectively voted in favour of renewable energy transition away from fossil fuels. While these developments have not occurred without error or setbacks, the closure of the Nampula Coal facility is expected to radically reduce pollution in the Lúrio River, where environmental organizations have raised concerns for years due to over 30 years of run-off from the coal plant. The Lúrio hydroelectric plant is also expected to be completed next month to complement the algae power facility in Angocha. | |
