“N-no. I will admit, I was completely unfamiliar with your talk about your Warp drives. Our own hyperdrives are quite safe, and can sometimes be incredibly swift - albeit a Class-1 is only approved for use on military vessels, and a Class 0.5 is exceptionally rare - but could theoretically make the journey from here to Bastion within a matter of hours.”

“If you are interested, I am positive that the Republic would be more than willing to share examples and technical information with you. Then again, such a device is hardly uncommon. I am positive that if you have any other vessels scouring the more inner reaches of the Galaxy, you would have stumbled upon at least several of them by now.”

The Cold Below || Ex-Machina 374

This world was a self-contained hell all to itself. As expected, the ship remained still and silent, with not a single soul even fathoming the idea of exiting to the surface. Their weapons remained at the ready, prepared to annihilate any beast which dared to attack them again.

They did detect presences of intelligent life - thankfully. Although some couldn’t help but wonder just how in the world anyone could survive on such a ruthlessly hostile planet.

Perhaps they have not been the first to be trapped here.

not long after the initial storm of lightning, something massive crashes nearby and clips their ship, causing it to spin a little. They could even hear the shouts of what seem to be humans, which is followed by sometimes either a scream of pain or triumph.

Expansion II

Another hundred worlds have been added to the Dominate's territory, in addition to a plethora of planetoids and moons. Many contain civilized alien races without spaceflight, but the uplifting process is proceeding smoothly. The remainder are a mix of feudal worlds or feral worlds; a handful are claimed by the Knight Houses of the Quaestor Dominis.

"This is - was - the location of Sol. How can you not know? It was the birthplace of humanity."

The commander stares at him blankly as he processes the information.

”This was the birthplace of humanity? How do you know!? The last nation we met barely had an idea what the Universal Union was, and we didn’t even know there was a Universal Union…”

"It may not be my place, as I am not a member of the Cult Mechanicum nor do I claim to know their inner workings, but I believe that Arch-magos Alypias would be ecstatic if you were to speak with him on this matter... Mere hours? Such a boon would have proved invaluable during the Great Crusade, my friend; if we are able to understand your technology, you would propel the Dominate to heights even the Imperium had never reached..."

The Guardsman's sentence finishes as they reach Vissier's quarters, where a servo-skull awaits, bearing a small silver tray upon which rests a bolt pistol.

"This skull will be able to communicate with the Arch-magos via the noosphere, if you so wish. As I'm sure the Captain informed you, there are several locations throughout the ship that you will be disbarred from entering - barracks, armory, engine room, so on and so forth; the normal restricted areas upon a ship. Is there anything you need of me before I return to my post, sir?"

"You are not the first humans encountered that did now know of their origin, or of the Imperium. Many colonies were lost during Old Night, and contact was cut as the empire of humanity crumbled to dust."

While the phrase 'Universal Union' is foreign to the Astartes, he merely assumes that the commander refers to the Imperium of Man - after all, what other human superpower had existed in humanity, bar that of Old Night?

“This is surprising info. But you’re saying the birthplace of humanity was here? All you’d be able to find here are traces of radio signals, but that’s it. I’d be surprised if Unitess out of all nations in the galaxy, held the birthplace of humanity in our borders, not even being aware of a Universal Union without a different nation giving us the information.”

Ellecon breathed a small sigh of relief. He felt the weight of his own paranoia lift off his shoulders just a bit more - not just from hearing that there was indeed a cure, but being able to return to Central Command with good news. Although he was routinely at-odds with his own commanding staff, being able to occasionally reconcile with them is invaluable.

”That’s relieving to hear. I will admit, the threat of the so-called ‘Animalpox’ has been a strong cause for paranoia among my people. If you could distribute a batch of these cures to us - so that we may make copies, just as a contingency - I would be most grateful.”

"Heh, that's a funny name. And yeah, we could easily distribute the vaccine to saharia. Also if you do care, head scientist Amber Ross is getting married next month and wanted to know if you'd attend."

"And that is the concern. Terra, Sol, they could not have merely vanished into the ether without an event of cataclysmic proportions, yet there are no residual readings in this sector to show what could have eliminated them... And yet, our star-charts clearly mark this as the Sol system. If you wish, this servo-skull could show you."

The skull's cybernetic eye telescopes outward, and a holographic map of the Sol system appears - it then proceeds to zoom out and show the entirety of the galaxy as it was under the Imperium, with dozens of notable systems labeled.

"The grip of the Imperium reached across the stars. Xenos were hunted and eliminated at all costs, and mankind entered a golden age of prosperity - until Horus Lupercal rebelled against the Emperor, and split the galaxy in twain. During this galactic conflict, we seceded from the Imperium and abandoned Horus to his folly; these events happened a mere handful of centuries in the past."

Development II

With more worlds incorporated into the Dominate every day - with many bearing either previously unknown xenos races or long-lost human colonists - the realm grows more powerful at a staggering rate. Several design techniques found across the human worlds have been incorporated into the forging of new armor for Guardsmen and PDF forces, giving them better survivability; where the Imperium would have simply thrown men into a meatgrinder, the Primarch values the life of every human, and prefers for those under his command to survive for as long as possible.

Expansion III

In the final phase of expansion, a dozen new paradise worlds were found, alongside dozens of feral and dead worlds. Only one world is found to meet the standards of the Mechanicum, and will be turned into a forge world post-haste.

The commander realizes that they call the human empire the ‘Imperium,’ and chooses to call it the same for the sake of communication.

“How can something that recent be lost history? It doesn’t make any sense, and how can something as important as humanity’s homeworld be completely missing?”

"That is the conundrum. Before the Imperium, the galaxy was in a state of chaos - humanity had previously ruled the stars, but fractured during Old Night when the Men of Iron rebelled against them and the Warp grew too chaotic for travel. Old Night, however, lasted thousands of years... For all knowledge of the Imperium to be lost, something else must be afoot. The Primarch had sent us to learn of the Imperium's fate, but we now have far more questions than answers; it may do us well to work together to remove the veil over the truth."

Lounarei

Black Fog Tears Open - Lónaré Core Worlds

After what seems like years, the anomaly finally slowly subsides. One day, the Concordat was plunged into a lack of communications. As if a sector wide EMP went off. Ship drives refused to work, the comma channels churned with glossy static wiping out all voice, and it almost seemed like the night that sky was darker than it’s usual pitch black. However, for the first time since the "Black Fog" started, the faint, sound of still hopeful voices can occasionally pierce the veil of white noise. A sign things are finally letting up? Or something else? Either way, the long time off duty communications officers are once again given purpose. If the world’s beyond have been plunged into isolation like this too, then they soon may need help. And after hours of slaving away, tweaking... The voices on the line where now... Serviceable. Not great, but at least legible.

For days later, rearming of ships was on the way to testing, as reception slowly got better and better. Sleepless nights just catching up, and contacting every nearby start, trying to reestablish the once prosperous command grid. However, it didn’t come without an... Unfortunate happening. Some of the outer colonies, on the fringes of Lónarénic space, pre-black out? AWOL. Taking it as a chance to try and sussed from the Concordat. Separatists. GODLESS Separatists, who turn their back on Bhaepe. This, simply won’t do. Not for very long, if the mainland has any say in it, at least. It's only right they learn to soon repent for their misguided ideas.

Soon, soon enough... It won't just be them renouncing their sins either.

Glimmer of Alien Power - Pirate Heavy Galactic Core

"So... Quite the ship you got, Canid." I black furred, golden eyed 5'8" Lonari says, standing over a vagrant Sakooran of old. Bound in ropes on the floor of their own ship. Boarded not long ago by this leader's of pirates. "Thanks for eating dirt so quickly. You know how it is. Test of might, right?" Kicking them over, reaching for their belt... Tearing off the very clearly high tech handle, and looking it over. "Always wanted to pull one of these..." She says, smirking, hitting the button... Gazing at the violent blood red blade that quickly erupted from it. "Hey, Méspsatu, captain?" And she groans, looking back to her underling, "Yes...?"

"What's with everyone's urge to collect these things... I mean, they're cool red beam swords, but uh... Why?"

"Show of strength. Simple as. If we as a crew can take down one of those... Magic goths," Pointing behind her to the bound Fox Person, with minimal regard, or respect, "Than we got mettle enough to be major."

"I just don't know how that's going to help when—"

And just like that, in a split second, Méspsatu's fur stands up static on the back of her neck. Reflexively twisting her body, arm with sabre in hand hold swinging, feet turning to quickly slash behind her with the energy blade... Only to cut right at the blaster bolt headed for her body, reflecting it at the roof, in one lightning fast motion. Huffing and pausing in disbelief after... What... Just overcame her?

Shakily dropping the crimson edge, shutting off as the button hits the floor, she scowls, stomping over to the expat vulpine sith, kicking them directly in the jaw, side-arm blaster getting dropped out of their hand in the throes of pain. "Who do you think you are, trying to cap me like that? Huh? Huh big guy?" And grabbing him by the ears, slamming his cranium down against the floor. Knocking the poor soul clean out, concussed. Taking a deep breath as her wrath subsides... Turning to look back down at the lightsaber she just scored as a trophy... And just ponder it.

"Well... It... Wouldn’t look too bad next to the machete on my belt... Right?"

"I'm just surprised you can even handle it. Last captain I was with thumbled holding it and cut his own arm clean off. Nobody I seen before can wield it right... ‘sept these... Weirdos."

"Think none of it, rookie. Now. We're heading back to capital base and celebrating. I need to... Go... Think about things."

And just like that... A soft glint in the balance of the force could be felt. Shifting for the first time in this galaxy for decades.

That was quite a bit to unpack. All of the other details were baseless and out of the blue - except for the mention of Earth. What possible connection could these xenos have to ancient Humanity?

As soon as he said those words, people carrying several chairs and a table walked into the hangar, and began setting up a meeting table in front of them.

"It seems you have lost much knowledge once widespread through the Imperium. In layman's terms, the Warp is a psychic dimension parallel to our own; it is what we utilize for interstellar travel. Old Night was a destructive, anarchic and regressive time period prior to the forming of the Imperium - it last for five thousand years, prior to which mankind prospered and grew in a golden age across the galaxy."
