Royal Family and Basic Government Function

Royal Family
The Royal Family has been active in the Puffin Islands since it was founded in the 1600s. Though they ruled as an absolute monarchy for centuries, power was partially relinquished to The Representation Movement and split their party with Parliament in 1889. The current Royal Family continues many traditions, like running a royal distillery and mandatory military service.

King Hunter the First
After spending his mandatory 2 years of service in the Air Force flying CAS-9s, he had only 4 years until the sudden death of his father thrust him onto the throne in early 2016. Despite being only 24 and not even being married, he stepped up to the challenge and has done respectably well. He’s had his fair share of trials and tribulations, like a wave of anti-monarchy terror attacks in 2019 and the publication of his ADHD diagnosis in 2020, but has done well and has always maintained an approval rating over 65%.

Queen Consort Dakota
Having met the Prince during their time in college, they had been together for a little over a year when King Hunter took the throne. After months of rumors and speculation, they finally married in early 2017. With her time as Queen Consort, she has become one of the most well loved people in the nation. Although she has made it very public she doesn’t always agree with the King’s political views and ideas, they work together on many projects and humanitarian efforts. Her caring personality and minimalistic ways have made her out as “one of us” to the commoners of the Islands.

Princess Elise & Prince Aric
The twin, and currently only, children of Hunter and Dakota were born in early 2020, and set off a rather bizarre controversy as to who was the oldest and therefore would be the next in line for the throne after King Hunter. After numerous testimonies from doctors and their mother, it was clarified that Elise was technically the older of the two, and would be the next heir to the throne. An interesting fact is that either child would be like their father, and be the first to bear their name as ruler of the Puffin Islands.

Parliament
The National Representative Parliament, established in 1889, has roughly equal power to that of the reigning monarch. Only Parliament can create laws, but if it isn’t passed by the Parliament or isn’t assessed within 90 days, it can be forced into passage by the monarch. As for seats, there are 200, and they are decided in a general election. Each 0.5% of the vote is awarded a guaranteed seat and any other fractions of a percent are rounded accordingly.
