The United Nations of Opiachus

Government: Unified planet-wide government with same-system colonies granted devolved powers and near-system colonies under autonomous administration. Separation of powers exists between an executive, legislative, and judicial branches.
Technology: Faster-than-light transportation and communication is in regular use.
Politics: Parliamentary representatives are selected at random from the population using sortition. The civil service is professional, powerful, efficient, and dominates the executive branch, which itself takes the initiative in the government. The legislature plays a supervisory role.
Diplomacy: Member of the interstellar Free Market Federation and of associated treaties and organizations. Formerly holding the delegacy of the Outer Space interstellar organization before exit.
Economy: Laissez-faire policies support free-market capitalism with some business subsidization and limited intervention in sectors the civil service deems essential for national security and stability. Tariff-free interstellar trade in goods and services and visa-free immigration exist with the regional Free Market Federation.
Military: Small military vessels regularly patrol the home and colonial systems. Vessels do not undertake regularly scheduled patrols in interstellar space or other systems as military leadership follows the fleet-in-being doctrine. Capital ships and medium-sized vessels are almost always docked. Vessels are armed with conventional, nuclear, and exotic weapons.
Society: The state has little control over society, especially in the colonies. Civil rights legislation is expansive. The pacifying effects of a very high average standard of living are cancelled out by high economic inequality. Minor crimes are widespread. Law enforcement prioritizes major offences. Public protests and activism over wealth inequality and the sortition system are common among the youth and the poor but lack wider support due to negative views of the various welfare states and democracies which existed pre-unification.
