The Republic of Maphia is a colossal, cultured nation, notable for its deadly medical pandemics, public floggings, and absence of drug laws. The hard-nosed, hard-working, cynical, humorless population of 6.478 billion Maphians are rabid consumers, partly through choice and partly because the government tells them to and dissenters tend to vanish from their homes at night.

The minute, corrupt, pro-business, well-organized government, or what there is of one, prioritizes Industry, with Defense also on the agenda, while Education and Law & Order aren't funded at all. Income tax is unheard of.

Crime, especially youth-related, is so common that it is unusual to encounter someone following the law, perhaps because of the country's complete lack of prisons. Maphia's national animal is the animal, which is also the nation's favorite main course.
