Description:

Ivan Industries is a Sovereign Corporation in the Michigan Wasteland. Its headquarters is technically in Southfield, out of the multi-building bunker known as the Gold Towers. It controls the surrounding area as well as the city of Detroit. It has a population of 102,208.

Ivan Industries was born from the elites, a group of wealthy survivors who rode out the war in luxury and comfort. The corporation is Ivan's vehicle to power and the restoration of the world, and only time will tell how it will succeed in the face of the Wasteland...

History:

Ivan Industries was actually a pre-war corporation that operated a number of automotive supply factories across the Rust Belt, but particularly in Michigan. Many of these factories were converted for war materiel during the Sino-American War, bringing in millions of dollars in military contracts. With the extra money flowing in, and the specter of nuclear war ever-growing, the founder and CEO, Ivan Thiessen, decided to invest in a bunker to protect his family and the nucleus of his operations in order to better rebuild once the war had blown over.

Being a graduate himself of Lawrence Technological University in Southfield, MI, Ivan eschewed buying a vault from Vault-Tec and instead commissioned an architect/engineer who was a fellow alumni. The architect proposed what he called "The Skyward Bunker" - the fortifying and NBC-sealing of an above-ground building into a nuclear-resistant bunker that could then be used to ride out a nuclear war in luxury and comfort. Nicholas Selenous, the architect in question, had proposed the idea to Vault-Tec but had been laughed out of the boardroom, saying that there was no way an above-ground building could be made nuclear-proof to any degree of success. So he proposed it to Ivan instead, and Ivan was enthusiastic - he even already had a location in mind.

The Golden Towers of Southfield - or at least, that's what he called the three mid-sized skyscrapers that dominated the skyline of that wealthy suburb of Detroit. The windows were tinted in such a color as to make them seem like gold when the sun reflected off of them, almost like a spaceman's helmet. One could hardly miss them as they drove north on M-10, and they were a widely recognized icon of Southfield. To Ivan's mind, they'd be perfect for living out the storm in comfort and security (as well as hypothetically being far enough away, hopefully, from the epicenter of a bomb strike in Detroit Proper to at least survive with minimal damage).

The finance group that owned the Towers wanted an exorbitant amount of money for the buildings initially, but after some heavy salesman work on Ivan's part were eventually convinced to become partners in the project. A holding company that would be responsible for the construction and later maintenance of the project was formed, at the time called the Skyward Holding Corporation. Ivan also went around Detroit soliciting other investors, talking to executives from such major corporations as American Motors, Thunderbird, and Little Caesar's. He even approached Corvega about the project, but they had a major partnership with Vault-Tec and wouldn't sign on without bringing Vault-Tec into the picture. Only Corvega failed to be impressed, as all the other corporations signed on to the project.

Construction of the bunker began in 2069. Despite the backing of Detroit's wealthiest tycoons, the necessary resources were hard to come by, as many materials were seized by the government or diverted to Vault-Tec in the name of the war and national security, respectively. In order to secure additional financing, Ivan began selling spots in the bunker to prominent citizens of Detroit. The Southfield Synagogue purchased a number of spots for their members, as did a number of Detroit sports stars and music icons such as notorious Detroit rocker Kid Gloves. Ivan competed directly with Vault-Tec who was also building a vault in the city and selling spots in it. Ivan did approach the leaders of Detroit's Little Arabia, but both them and Little Mexico opted to buy spots in the Vault instead.

The project was completed in 2076 despite all the difficulties the construction project had encountered. All three towers had been fortified, with the glass replaced with the most blast-resistant material they could find, using materials similar to those used in space helmets' visors and similarly colored to reflect off the radiation. Shutters behind the windows provided back-up protection in case the glass failed. The basements had been enlarged to contain a cold fusion powerplant and a water purifier, drawing water from a deep well that had been drilled nearby. The basements doubled as fallback positions in case the towers above were compromised in some way. The basements also held cryo-pods, an idea Ivan had to increase the capacity of the buildings and/or provide a way to siphon off extra population if necessary.

The test of this new bunker came almost exactly a year later when the inevitable escalation of the Sino-American war happened. Those that had spots, and even a few that didn't, escaped to the tower which was then sealed. There was then only the waiting as they watched the missiles fall.

They got lucky. It's unknown if the towers would have actually survived even a close miss, because the towers didn't end up needing to. The bomb that struck Detroit struck the south side where the heaviest concentration of factories and warehouses was. Southfield was far enough away from the shockwave that it barely shook the building. The amount of radiation sent their way was still immense, but the gold-tinted windows (and the thick lead-lined shutters behind them) did their jobs in keeping the radiation out. Nicholas' project had been a success, though he wouldn't know it for several decades as both he and Ivan had decided to freeze themselves to wait out the war instead of living among everyone else.

Fast forward 210 years, and the Towers had opened. Their position as a source of clean water, particularly in the earliest years, had allowed them to exert a powerful influence over the communities that took shape in post-apocalyptic Detroit. The Towers themselves became the center of a shantytown where opportunistic merchants built water caravans that traveled not only the length of the cityscape but also southeastern Michigan. Skyward Holdings Inc. became something of a shadow government, though as the environment improved and new sources of clean water became available, their influence waned. By 2277, their influence had dwindled to the point where the shantytown below them was having trouble buying food as the income from water transportation had dwindled to a crisis point. The unrest among the caravan workers grew, especially since the Towers had plenty of food for themselves but only sold them to the people below at exorbitant prices.

Enter Ivan back into the picture. The cryopods had been intended to open after 50 years, but a glitch in the computer system had kept them sealed for 200. Ivan, Nicholas, and a number of other executives only ended up being released in 2277. Ivan personally was appalled by the intense apathy the residents of the Towers had fallen into. The Towers hadn't been meant for long-term living but short-term protection; after that, they were supposed to go out into the wasteland and rebuild their industrial empires. Instead their descendants had become dependent on the luxury and comfort of their tower bunker, unwilling to do even some of the most basic tasks for themselves.

Ivan eventually had enough and utilized the angry people outside to stage a hostile takeover of the Towers. The affair was bloody but brief, and in 2278 Ivan dissolved the Skyward Holding Corporation and asserted the dominance of Ivan Industries, with himself as majority stockholder and CEO. He then spent the next nine years rebuilding the Towers' influence in Detroit, facing off against Vault 100 which had been growing in power and influence as Skyward Holdings' had waned. The competition eventually escalated into all-out war in 2285, with Ivan's security forces facing off against the Vault's security forces and their allies. The war lasted nearly a year, but Ivan had an ace on his side - grizzled mercenary-veteran-turned-Company-Man Jonathan Wheeler, who proved to be something of a tactical genius. By first isolating the Vault's allies in Dearborn, with quick strikes against both the Detroit Caliphate and the Hidalgos Jonathan managed to knock them off their feet long enough to invade the vault itself and force its surrender.

By 2289, Ivan had firmly solidified his position in Detroit, turning into one gigantic Company Town.

Perks:
- Heavy Industry History: The bunker that Ivan Industries was founded out of had been built and was inhabited by the best the American Auto and Heavy Industry had to offer - executives, financiers, architects and designers, the leaders of their industries. The industry least represented? The Arms Industry. Move two tech points from Weapons to Industry.
- Legacy of Intelligence: Being the descendants of heavy industry leaders and engineers, the scientists of Ivan Industries have a legacy of intelligent design backing them up. This more or less translates into being far better at understanding technical documents found in the wasteland and replicating their information practically. Technical Documents provide double points per document.

Government:

Ivan Industries is first and foremost a corporation, with 80% of its shares owned by the President and CEO, Ivan Thiessen. The government is organized as a Corporate Republic, with most laws and internal decisions handled by a Board of Directors. The Board of Directors makes laws, approves treaties, and are at least consulted on all military actions. However, the CEO is himself a Director, one with enough power to override the Board at will. In practice, he usually leaves most decisions to the Board, only choosing to exercise his authority in important situations.

Both the CEO and the Directors are unelected. The Directors are, by and large, the heads of the various shareholder communities that exist within the Sovereign Corporation. Most of these communities are autocratic, with their leaders only being replaced upon death or senility; as such, turnover in the Board is rare.

Meet The Family!

The day to day affairs of the corporation are managed by the Departments, whose heads form the Cabinet. Currently there are seven, the Department of Personnel, the Department of Public Relations, the War Department, the Department of Research and Design, the Finance Department, the Legal Department, and the Maintenance Department.

1. Human Resources Department
--Oversees all things concerning the citizens of Ivan Industries, from education to welfare, and performs such duties as collecting the corporate census. Is the primary agency overseeing the employment of personnel both at the Corporate level and in the factory level. Shares responsibility for homestead management with the Maintenance Department.

2. Department of Public Relations
--Functions as both the government's domestic Public Relations and State Department (international diplomacy). Domestically it runs the State news agency.

3. Security Department
--Oversees the military and is usually run by a General, who serves as the entire military's second-in-command. A civilian assistant is usually also appointed to oversee military infrastructure and personnel issues. The Security Department is a separate organ from the Asset Protection Bureau, which is a subordinate agency to the Legal department, responsible instead for what could be termed as "external security", i.e. defense against external threats rather than providing for internal order.

4. Department of Research and Design
--Oversees the development of all new technology, from bleeding edge military technology to improvements in civilian infrastructure and medicine. It also runs the patent office and regulates private medical research and the release of new medicines to market. Actual research is carried out by the Ivan Industries Research Division.

5. Finance Department
--Equivalent to a national Treasury Department, is responsible for managing the finances of the Corporation through the collection of profit-shares and contributions from Subsidiaries. Manages the minting and/or printing of new currency through the Central Bank.

6. Legal Department
--Manages the court system and is responsible for the national enforcement of laws. The Bureau of Asset Protection is a subordinate agency and runs the Corporation's internal security, helping to enforce the laws decided by the Board/CEO.

7. Facilities Department
--Is responsible for the management of the Interior, including internal infrastructure like Roads and Railroads, as well as any directly-managed factories and company towns. Where it is not directly responsible, such as in charter towns, it provides support to local maintenance groups. Also manages the Corporation's power grid.

Overview
When Ivan, a dedicated Romanophile, first set up the Security Forces, he decided that he would dispense with modern military organization and ranking and instead adopt a modified Roman system. When Robert Thiessen revived the corporation after the Cataclysm, he kept the ranking system devised by his father. Consequently, the Ivan Industries Security Forces are made up of Legions, and all soldiers have Latin ranks.

The Security Forces have four branches, each with its own distinct, yet similar, organization:
1. Security Legions
-- The Security Legions are the backbone of the Security Forces, being the Infantry component. Mechanized Infantry also fall under their auspices.

2. Equites Legionis
-- The Equites Legionis are the Armor units of the Security Forces. Though their unit organization is somewhat different from the Peacekeepers, their command structure is the same, and they are usually attached to Security Legion cohorts or legions.

3. Air Legions
-- The Air Legions are, obviously, the air force of the Security Forces. Though their command structure is the same as the Peacekeepers at Centuria level and above, their command is normally independent.

4. The Classis
-- The Classis (the Latin word for Fleet) are divided up between the Classis Orae (Latin for Coast Fleet) and the Classis Universalis (The Universal or International Fleet). The main distinction between the two is that the Classis Orae are actually under the auspices of the Personnel Department, as they are considered more of a police force than an armed military. The Classis Universalis are under the auspices of the War Department, just like the other branches. Both Classis are distinct from the other branches in that they do not have a rigid structure above the Century level, rather having Command Groups that change to meet operational needs.

Ranks
Ranks in the Security Forces are taken from Imperial Roman ranks, and at the enlisted level don't have clear equivalents to Roman ranks. For the most part ranks are standard across all the branches, with the exception of the Classis, which have their own ranks above the Century.

1. Land and Air (ascending order)
a) Enlisted
-- Tirones (new recruit, equivalent to an E1 in the U.S. military)
-- Milites (next level, equivalent to an E2)
-- Munifex (third tier lower enlisted, equivalent to an E3)
-- Immunes (Equivalent to a U.S. Army Specialist, the support soldier)
-- Decanus/Decurion (NCO - in charge of a Cotubernium (peacekeepers), Turmae (Equites) or Wing (Air Legion)
---- Decanus Primus (Literally 1st Sergeant - rank exists only for Air Legion; commands a Formation)
b) Officer
-- Optio - Assistant to the Centurion (equivalent to a Lieutenant)
-- Centurion - commands a Century (equivalent to a Captain)
-- Tribunus - Assistant to the Primipilus/Legatus (equivalent to a Major)
-- Primipilus - commands a Cohort (equivalent to a Lieutenant Colonel)
---- Primipilus Alae - commands a Cohortis Equitatae
-- Tribunus Laticlavius - Second in command of a Legion (Equivalent to a Lieutenant Colonel)
-- Legatus - Commands the Legion (equivalent to a Colonel)
-- Dux - Commands two or more Legions (highest rank in the Security Forces)

2. Coast and Sea
a) Enlisted
-- Tirones (new recruit)
-- Remiges (seaman - E1-E4)
-- Principales (NCO)
b) Officer
-- Optio (equivalent to an ensign)
-- Centurion - assistant to the Trierarchus (equivalent to a Lieutenant)
-- Trierarchus - Commands the Ship (equivalent to a Captain)
-- Nauarchus - Commands a Cohortis Classicus (equivalent to a Rear Admiral)
-- Praefectus Classis - Commands a Classis (equivalent to a Fleet Admiral)

Organization
1. Security Legions
-- The Ivan Industries army is made up of Legions, which normally contain 6240 soldiers and is led by a Legate. The legion is subdivided into ten cohorts of 620 soldiers each, and each cohort is made up of 6 centuries. The cohort has four infantry centuries and two centuria auxilia (support centuries), and is led by a Primipilus. Each century consists of 102 soldiers and is commanded by a Centurion. The basic unit of the army is the Contubernium, which consists of 9 men and one Decanus. The Contubernium is comparable to the American Squad.
-- Each cohort has four infantry centuries and two support centuries, one of them being an artillery century (the other being engineers). Each infantry century is composed of 1 Centurion, 1 optio, 10 Immunes who act as administrative staff as well as being able to fight, 1 Contubernium of machine gunners, and then 8 Contubernae of strictly infantry. Of the 10 Immunes, 1 is a chaplain, 3 are Medicus, 1 is a quartermaster, and the remaining five handle personnel paperwork.

2. Air Legions
-- The basic unit of the Ivan Industries Air Legions is the Wing, which is 3 planes and their pilots and then 7 mechanics and technicians. One of the pilots is a Decanus who commands the wing. They are then grouped together in a Formation, which is three Wings. The Formation is commanded by the most senior Decanus. 3 wings make up an Air Century, and is commanded by a centurion. 6 Air Centuries equal an Air Cohort, which is commanded by a Primipilus, and 10 cohorts equal an Air Legion, commanded by a Legatus.

3. Equites Legionis
-- Ivan Industries armor legions' basic unit is the Turmae, which is 3 tanks (11 soldiers and 1 Decurion). Next is the Alae, which is 10 Turmae (30 tanks, 122 soldiers, commanded by a centurion and an optio). 6 alae is a Cohortis Equitatae (commanded by a Prefectus Alae, 180 tanks, 740 soldiers ) and 10 Cohorts equal a Legionis Equitatae.

4. Naval Units
-- Ivan Industries navy is divided up between two branches - the Classis Orae (latin for Coast Fleet) and the Classis Universali (Latin for Universal Fleet). As far as crew is concerned, each ship's crew is considered a Centuria, regardless of size. The Centuria is commanded by a Trierarchus, with a Centurion acting as his first lieutenant. The next rank down are the Principales, as many as are needed, who act as section chiefs.
-- Fleets are organized 10 ships to a Cohortis Classicus, and 6 Cohortis Classicus to a Classis. A Cohortis Classicus is commanded by a Nauarchus, and a Classis is commanded by Praefectus Classis. Commanders of two or more Classes are Legatus.

Uniforms
For combat, Ivan Industries uses a black uniform that looks more like a police uniform. When in garrison, they can be distinguished by the color of their berets - black berets are the Peackeepers, sky-blue berets are the Air Legions, navy-blue berets belong to the Classes, and red berets denote the soldiers of the Legionis Equitatae. Their dress uniforms are spartan, being black, their only adornment being a gold braid. The dress uniform is consistent across the Air Legions, the Legionis Equitatae, the Peacekeeper Legions and the Classes, with no distinctions except for unit insignias.

The Shadowbolt Program
The Shadowbolt Program is the Sovereign Corporation's program of elite fighters from all branches except the Classes. While it was primarily started as an elite aerial fighting force, it has evolved to encompass all the elite forces of the Corporation. Its troops are managed separately from the War Department, and its leaders answer to no one but the CEO himself.
