The Empire of Valtan is a large, orderly nation, remarkable for its barren, inhospitable landscape, irreverence towards religion, and restrictive gun laws. The hard-working, cynical population of 50 million Valtanians are kept under strict control by the oppressive government, which measures its success by the nation's GDP and refers to individual citizens as "human resources."

The medium-sized, moralistic government juggles the competing demands of Law & Order, Defense, and Welfare. The average income tax rate is 37.2%, but much higher for the wealthy.

The Valtanian economy, worth 2.16 trillion reiclars a year, is quite specialized and dominated by the Trout Farming industry, with significant contributions from Basket Weaving, Retail, and Automobile Manufacturing. Average income is 43,118 reiclars, and evenly distributed, with the richest citizens earning only 2.2 times as much as the poorest.

100-year-old politicians are now a thing of the past, copies of the constitution are used as toilet paper, a little pushing and pulling is needed for big ships to pass, and the government struggles to keep up with the endless list of petrol disasters. Crime, especially youth-related, is totally unknown, thanks to a well-funded police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Valtan's national animal is the Valtan Morror, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation.
