The People's Republic of Alkino is a small, safe nation, notable for its barren, inhospitable landscape, irreverence towards religion, and stringent health and safety legislation. The compassionate, democratic population of 45 million Alkinians love a good election, and the government gives them plenty of them. Universities tend to be full of students debating the merits of various civil and political rights, while businesses are tightly regulated and the wealthy viewed with suspicion.

The enormous, socially-minded, outspoken government juggles the competing demands of Welfare, Education, and Healthcare. The average income tax rate is 74.2%, and even higher for the wealthy.

The sizeable but underdeveloped Alkinian economy, worth 1.36 trillion chervonets a year, is driven entirely by a combination of government and state-owned industry, with private enterprise illegal. The industrial sector, which is quite specialized, is mostly made up of the Trout Farming industry, with significant contributions from Woodchip Exports, Information Technology, and Basket Weaving. Average income is 30,329 chervonets, and distributed extremely evenly, with little difference between the richest and poorest citizens.

Kindergarten teachers with ankle-bracelets are closely supervised by their parole officers, flash floods that dams could have controlled regularly ravage small towns in mountain valleys, innocent defendants often plead guilty for fear of receiving a much harsher sentence before jury, and seasonal hay-fever sufferers are attending government drug counselling sessions to get free doughnuts. Crime is totally unknown, thanks to a very well-funded police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Alkino's national animal is the dove, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to toxic air pollution.
