On 'History Hit' youtube channel, people were asked who was the first King of England. After some discussion, a historian revealed that the first proper King of 'most' England was Aethelstan. However, the channel did not insist that there be one right answer only. For example, a book I have been reading regarded Edward the Elder the first 'proper' King.
