Accurate of December 2018

The Totzkan Armed Legions are the land warfare branch of the National Armed Forces of Totzka, responsible for the security of the Totzkan Union and defending the rule of the Federal Government. As of 2018, the Armed Legions comprises of over 210,000 personal while, due to the nation's policy of ‘total national defence, claiming the potential to supply over 426,262 reserves, which includes the 13 state militias and the nation's various security forces.

The Armed Legions have a long history of involvement in Totzkan politics. Following the conclusion of the Totzkan Revolution in 1979 the leadership of many of the various paramilitary and revolutionary factions were murdered during the Constitution Massacres, leaving tens of thousands of former fighters without direction. Amitabh Sanjiv, the first president-executor of the Totzkan Union, brought these men into the fold of the new National Armed Forces, structuring the units to break up pre-existing factional loyalties. The result was the initial twenty five armed legions, each led by men loyal to Sanjiv, who each held the rank of Coronel. As Supreme Commander Sanjiv coordinated the 1981 annexation of Yhaiva into the Totzkan Union. Sanjiv’s assassination in 1983 allowed Suraj Chirapati to assume the presidency. Chirapati distrusted the military and reorganised the Armed Legions under five divisions, each led by a loyal ally of Chirapati. Chirapati also created the Military Political Affairs Committee (CAPM) under the new Federal Section 9: Executive for Domestic Security, which conducted multiple purges of the Armed Forces. When the Comissão Popular, Totzka’s federal legislature impeached, arrested and executed Chirapati on the 18th of December 1989, the Armed Legions did not uphold their oaths of loyalty to the president but instead took many of their senior commanding officers, particularly the ones appointed by the Chirspati, into custody. Under Chirapati’s successors, Ado’Iagano Rosmakona and Desidéria Lorena Sharma, the Armed Forces was largely neglected. Under Director Rafinha Akhil Korrapati the coronels of the more rural legions grew particularly more powerful with some being accused of carving out their own private fiefdoms in the Totzan countryside. The 1998 Caso de Corporação-Sindicato Scandal (in which Totzka’s largest domestic business were revealed to have been funded by the criminal organisation Sindicato Aristocrático) caused an economic crisis within the nation as thousands of Totzkan’s lost their jobs. President Sharma mobilised several legions in an attempt to restore order as many of the cities in the south and west descended into rioting. Act-Of-Government 4-1-2002 (Emergency Measures) granted executive power to Rohan Siva Amrit Korrapati, general of the 1st Legiões Estratégicas Division. He would retain power for twelve years. As President, Korrapati would extend the nation’s conscription program, creating 31 new legions. The total 56 legions would now be organised into 9 divisions. Korrapati would also extensively refit the legion’s equipment (some of which dated from the Imperial War) purchasing equipment from Noronica, Altera Republics, Dormill and Stiura and Corindia.

There are current four types of division present in the armed legions: Estratégicas whose purpose is to be deployed overseas; the Fuzileiros Navais whose role is to defend Totzka's vulnerable northern coast; Nacional who are deployed against any internal threat and the mountain division which is based in the Terras das Picos area. Each division is composed of an average of 6 legions, the basic unit of the Armed Legions designed for unsupported operations, and in turn are composed of around four to six battalions. Legions are often moved between divisions and as such the unit cohesion of a Legion is generally stronger than that of the division.

The junior personnel of the armed legions are largely conscripts while all officers ranked Lieutenant or above are volunteers. Following the extension of conscription in the early 2000s the legions have become increasingly segregated along ethnic-religious lines and is largely dominated by Catholic Ilhan or Buddhist Pamil personnel.
