Yes, but what is thier nation’s requirements that need to be upheld? And in exchange, what do you provide?

Colonies are a synonym of vassal; the vassal state often has to pay tribute to the empire/nation that owns them, or loose some forme of support that is critical to them.

Let’s say nation X is the vassal, and nation Y is the empire.

If nation X has a lot of militaristic enemies, than nation X will possibly seek protection coming from nation Y.

Nation Y protects nation X, but at the price of a monthly tribute of resources, like oil, or industrial metals.

Nation X, now need to obey nation Y to survive.

That’s what a colony/vassal state is.

...Did you actually make a vassalhood agreement with them, with 0 terms on either end, and only it functioning as a title?
