Madruejian Vices

by Madrueji

All nations have their fair share of dark secrets, and Madrueji is certainly no exception to this rule. A bustling gray market exists within the country, its tendrils reaching far within the bowels of Madruejian society. Here are some of the many vices and morally questionable institutions that are enjoyed by the denizens of Madrueji:

A Madruejian Slave Market

Slavery

A widespread institution within Madrueji, slavery has existed as a part of Madruejian society since the dawn of civilization. While it would seem that Zoroastrianism would forbid such a practice from occuring, there is nothing within the scriptures that explicitly outlaws slavery. Indeed, it has become a common occurrence within the nation, and the Fire Priests themselves often make use of slaves to help maintain their sacred temples. One can become a salve in the following ways:

-Rebellion against the Shah or a similarly serious crime. Slavery is used as a form of punishment, to deter criminals from committing such acts.
-Those captured as prisoners of war. Enemy combatants are fair game to be enslaved, indeed, it is believed that the practice came about to prevent Madruejian soldiers from just slaughtering or executing captured enemy troops in the heat of the moment.
-As a payment to settle any outstanding debts. Debtors can choose to become slaves in lieu of any physical or monetary compensation.
-As a hereditary position. In a few instances, the slave's descendants would be treated as slaves under Madruejian law, such as those assigned to tend to Fire Temples.

Slaves can be bought and sold at will, and their masters controlled their income, all of it going to them first. While the life of slaves was certainly no desirable position, slaves did have a few rights under the law. They could represent themselves in legal cases, and excessive cruelty against them was forbidden, though hard to enforce. All slaves had three days off every month and could keep any gifts given to them by their master. As long as the slave was a Zoroastrian, he or she could one day buy freedom from enslavement, and once freed, could no longer be enslaved again.

Madruejian Smoking Hookah

Drug Use

Whether for religious, medical, or recreational purposes, drug use is a common sight within the communities of Madrueji. From the lowest of peasants to the richest of nobles, many fall victim to these so-called "pleasures of the flesh", and spend small fortunes to get their next fix. The Hashashin, Madreuji's top assassins, often ritually ingest Hashish before battle, hence how they got the name "Hashashin". Opium is often prescribed as a painkiller and is orally ingested as small capsules.

The most common form of drug paraphernalia is the Hookah pipe, a device created for vaporizing tobacco, hashish, or opium. The users then inhale the vapors as they emanate from the Hookah pipe. Smoking a Hookah pipe is seen as a social activity done with a group of other people. It can be dangerous to do so, as Hookah stations are often breeding grounds for all sorts of infectious diseases. Sometimes toxic chemicals can get into the user's bloodstreams should they not get filtered out by the Hookah's water basin. Yet despite the risk, it remains a very popular pastime in Madrueji.

Much like slavery, Hookah pipes have simply become an accepted part of mainstream society, and nobles will go to great lengths to acquire richly decorated and ornately made Hookah pipes, whatever their cost might be. In the past, Madrueji's Shahs have banned the practice temporarily, but have always reverted the ban on Hookah smoking, as it is far too popular and financially lucrative to give up. Many Shah's themselves are known to engage in Hookah smoking, and the Madruejian state runs their own Hookah centers, making massive yearly profits from them.

Slave Girl Automaton Holding a Wine Glass

Alcohol

Much like drug use, alcohol is commonly drunk within Madrueji. It is widely available for purchase, and there is no legal drinking age. Wine and other spirits are the most popular type of drink within Madrueji, being seen as the drink of nobles and other well-to-do members of society.

Beer, on the other hand, is seen as the drink of the masses and is far cheaper to buy than other spirits. Many households brew their own beer or make their own wine, and much like Hookah smoking, drinking is seen as a social activity done with other large groups of people.

Ismail al-Jazari, the famed and celebrated automata inventor, has come up with several different devices center around the theme of alcohol, and these devices have seen a surge of popularity within Madrueji, especially among the nobility. From wine dispensing devices to robotic waitresses that "serve" out drinks, alcohol culture is here to stay.

The Madruejian state makes its own brands of wines and other spirits that it sells to its own people and exports to other nations. Much like Hookah, it generates tremendous revenue for the Shah and helps to keep the people occupied and content.

Unlike Hookah, alcoholic beverages have never been subjected to any sort of ban, and Madrueji takes pride in the variety and quality of different drinks that they offer. Very few other countries and nations are able to compete with the quality and quantity of Madruejian beverages!

Madruejian Card Game

Gambling

Whether as a friendly game between friends and companions, or as a serious attempt to win a small fortune, nearly every Madruejian has extensive experience with gambling in one way, shape or form. Entire fortunes can be lost or made overnight, and for those with wealth and prestige, gambling can either be an excellent way to recoup some lost finances or lose all that they had in the first place.

Card games are quite popular all across the nation. LinkAs-Nas is a similar game to poker, while the game of LinkGanjifa varies in its ruleset. All decks are handmake, the cards being painted individually, by hand, and shaped into either rectangles or circles depending on what the exact game is. Wealthier patrons have cards made of ivory and other valuable materials, and these decks themselves are often put up as collateral for a bet.

Dice and knucklebones are also popular forms of gambling, mainly among the lower classes due to how easy and accessible they are to craft or purchase. Loading dice is seen as a serious crime in Madrueji, as perpetrators can expect to have their hands severed as punishment should they be caught cheating in this way.

Horse, camel and ostrich racing are all universally popular among the citizens of Madrueji, with the Shah sponsoring several large races every year. Such races attract enormous bets, millions of dinars exchanging hands at the end of every race that happens. Such betting is strictly the domain of the upper class, but the peasantry often places their own low stakes bets on the outcomes of such race regardless.

Racers must adhere to strict guidelines in order to compete in these races. Those who fail to comply with the Shah's specifications risk being fined, banned, and in extreme cases of cheating, having either their animal or themselves being put to death for their transgressions.

Contraband

There is an old saying among the citizenry: "If you've got the coin, Madrueji has the contraband". Smuggling is a common pastime in Madrueji, with smugglers establishing routes all throughout the nation. Despite the Shah's best attempts to stamp out such practices, they continue to flourish.

The Shah maintains a list of "banned items", with anything on the list being illegal for most people to own or trade. They range from things such as rare gems and minerals to dangerous beasts and other monsters to certain magical items such as necromancy tomes. Just owning said items can often bring the death penalty, but that hasn't stopped the trade from occurring, and many nobles maintain private collections of such "banned" items in secret.
