Arthur Winthrop read the paper at the Easy Go Diner. More of the same really. War protests against the War in theConfederation of independent colonies, the new President Jack Barker, or Jack “The Dog” Barker as the press sometimes liked to call him. He sighed and put the paper down before taking a puff off his cigarette. The taste was still awful, but nothing a little coffee couldn’t fix. He motioned to the waitress “Excuse me, miss, could I get a pour of coffee?” He said, that salesman smile on his face, his wife liked to call it his ‘snake oil salesman smile.’ In the diner there were a few other people, mostly reading the paper too or a book. Some munched on plates of fires and burgers, a soda half finished next to them. A 1960 Bel Air passed the window outside, it’s lights illuminating the water droplets on the glass of the window from the recent rains. The radio played a lazy tune over it. The waitress came over and poured him a cop of coffee into his glass. A few droplets landed on his dress shirt under his opened jacket. You ain’t gonna be a salesman without a winning look, you know. “Oh, I’m so sorry sir.” She said, grabbing napkins for him. Arthur chuckled to himself with a smile. “Don’t worry ma’am, no harm done. it’s no issue. Listen, will you watch my jacket while I go and try and get this out?” She nodded and walked back to the kitchen. While Arthur meandered over to the bathroom. Once inside the anger finally released as began to mutter swears and curses at the waitress, pacing the whole time he did. He punched his open hand a few times before trying frantically to get the coffee stain out, but to no avail. More anger filled him, but he simply contained it like he usually did in public and made his way back to the counter where he grabbed his wallet to pay for his meal, when he noticed that 20 bucks was missing from it. It filled him with even more hatred and anger toward the waitress with the name tag of “Beth.” He dropped his head and composed himself again. He plastered his Office Supply salesman smile again. “Excuse me... Aly. Could you tell me where your friend has gone? I just want to make sure she got my tip.” The waitress behind the counter nodded. “Yeah, she went out back for her break. You can probably catch her.” Arthur nodded and made his way out the back after thanking Aly with “all his heart.” Out back the waitress stood. His dress shoed feet slapped through the puddles as he confronted her in the alley. The sound startled her. “Listen, Beth, I know what you did. Your going to come clean, or your going to have hell to pay missie.” The waitress named Beth looked around for an escape of some sort. She backed off “I... I don’t know what your taking about sir.” She said, fear in her voice. “Ohhhhhhhhh yessss! Yes you do. Don’t lie, just give me my money.” At this point he was close enough to grab her. “I did nothing of the sort, and I’m offended you would say so.” She turned away and started to speed walk. Arthur grabbed her and began to yell into her face, calling her many different things. He was shaking with rage, shaking with fear and anxiety. He was shaking with the.... thrill of danger. When she turned around and slapped him, he broke loose. Grabbing a brick from a pile nearby, he swung it with all of his strength to her head. She was struck, her head cracked at the impact. She fell sideways to the ground, motionless. Arthur stood there, looking down on what he did. He felt... horrified. Horrified that he would put himself in so much danger. It was a bad thing he did, he knew he needed to cover it up. No one needed to know. But... something else... the danger was enough to get his adrenaline pumping as he stood there, brick smeared with blood in his hand. It was power, it was danger, it was something he had never felt before, and... he liked it. The pool of blood grew around her head, but he couldn’t risk her waking up in an alley and potentially turning him in! He took another two good smacks into her face with the brick. He dropped it into a puddle of water next to him before dragging the body behind some crates. To try and cover it up for a bit, he positioned her in a sitting position, hoping that would be enough to give him at least a day to compose himself and distance himself from the crime. The whole time a sick ecstasy overwhelming him. He was still shaking as he left the alley, his hands washed in a puddle to keep the blood from drawing stares. He entered his car and drove home. He did his normal routine: Shower, watch TV, Brush teeth after a few leftovers, and go to sleep. It was like any other day. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||
