His Majesty’s Ships

Prefixes

HMFS (His/Her Majesty's Flag Ship):
When carrying a Flag Officer of the Royal Navy, His/Her Majesty's Coast Guard, His/Her Majesty's Surgeon Corps, or the Monarch themseles, a ship will be designated as a Flag Ship.

HMWS (His/Her Majesty's War Ship):
Used in the naming of Warships of Aircraft Carrier, Escort Carrier, Assault Carrier, Battleship, Cruiser, Destroyer, Frigate, Submarine, and Escort Ship classes in the Royal Navy.

HMC (His/Her Majesty's Cutter):
Used in the naming of Cutters in the Coast Guard, Icebreakers, Coastal Defense Vessels, Minesweeper Vessels.

HMHS (His/Her Majesty's Hospital Ship):
Used in the naming of Hospital Ship classes in the Royal Navy and the Surgeon Corps.

HMSS (His/Her Majesty's Sailing Ship):
Used in the naming of ships of which are for usage by His/Her Majesty's Loyal Government or the Royal Family (i.e. Yachts, Sailboats, Barges, etc.)

HMS (His/Her Majesty's Ship):
Used by ships of the Merchant Marine during wartime, and in the naming of transportation and tanker vessels.
